I'm in my 50s and I always feel exhausted no matter what. I’ve got no idea why. I live a healthier lifestyle than most of the women I know. But other women my age somehow have energy to travel and host gatherings and keep up with their grandkids without breaking a sweat while I can barely make it through the afternoon without my eyes feeling heavy. I keep telling myself that it’s just a normal part of getting older but honestly, I barely feel alive anymore and I don’t know if this is normal.. ☝☝☝ That's what was running through my head 3 months ago. Not quite panicking, but definitely confused about why I'm this exhausted all the time… — I’ll probably get emotional while writing this post but I’m going to do it anyway. If it changes even one woman’s life, it’s worth it. So for the last few years my fatigue got really bad. And like most women, I kept telling myself "it's just menopause, this is normal." And every few months I'd try going to bed earlier or taking vitamins and nothing would change. I went to the doctor. Got bloodwork done. Everything came back normal. But I'd still wake up feeling worse than when I went to bed. So I'd just accept it and tell myself this is what happens when you get older. And people would say "you're in your 50s now, of course you're tired. We aren’t kids anymore." and I believed them. I was almost forced to accept that this might just be my life now. Meanwhile my sister who's 61 just got back from a two-week solo trip to Italy. And at every family gathering she's the last one standing, helping clean up, still talking at 10pm. So it's always obvious that I'm the only one who can't keep up anymore. The worst thing was when my granddaughter asked me why I don't play with her like Aunt Linda does. Like she's noticing that I'm different from the other adults. Last month was my granddaughter's 5th birthday party at my daughter's house. And forty minutes in, I sat down on the couch during the games because I was too tired to stand with the other parents. I could feel my eyes getting heavy so I closed my eyes for just a second while they were opening presents. And I woke up to my daughter gently shaking my shoulder saying "Mom, we're doing cake now." Like everyone had been waiting for me to wake up. My granddaughter looked at me and said "is Grandma sick?" And I didn't know what to tell her because I wasn't sick, I was just so tired I literally fell asleep at her birthday party. So two weeks later my daughter invited us over for dinner. And I almost said no because I knew I'd probably be falling asleep on her couch by 7pm. But I went anyway and after we ate I sat down while she was showing me photos from their vacation. So she was talking and I kept nodding off mid-conversation. She stopped showing me photos. Just looked at me with this expression I couldn't read. Like concern mixed with disappointment. So my daughter called me the next morning. And she asked "Mom, when's the last time you actually felt rested?" Like the way she said it wasn't casual, it was worry. And I told her I don't remember, maybe years ago. So she said "I think you need to see someone. This isn't normal." Like the concern in her voice made me realize this isn't just what happens when you age. So that's when I realized I can't keep accepting this and hoping it magically gets better. And I started looking for help specifically for chronic exhaustion in women over 50. Like not general "get more sleep" advice, but real answers for why I have zero energy no matter what I try. Someone who understands that I'm not being lazy, I'm just genuinely exhausted and don't know what to do at this point. So I found this women's health specialist on Facebook who posted about fatigue in menopausal and post-menopausal women. And she had some content that was specifically about fatigue in the 50+ age group which caught my attention because most advice is never that specific. So I sent her a message explaining my situation and that I'd tried everything. She asked me what I'd tried so far. I told her about my doctor visits, bloodwork, vitamins, going to bed earlier, cutting out coffee, and all of the other things I’d tried that didn’t do anything. Like I didn't even know what else to try. Then she explained what the root cause of my exhaustion was. And I was shocked when I learned about it. "I'm going to tell you something that might be hard to hear and might sound controversial." And I thought, oh no, what am I doing wrong? But then she said something that completely changed how I was thinking about this. And it made me realize the problem wasn't my age, my lifestyle or my hormones or anything else I'd been blaming. She explained that chronic exhaustion in women over 50 is almost always a sleep quality issue, not a sleep quantity issue. Like she said you can be in bed for 8 hours and still wake up exhausted because your body never actually rested. So I told her I don't wake up at night, I sleep through, so I thought sleep wasn't my problem. And she said "that's exactly what I'm talking about. You're unconscious for 8 hours but your body is running on stress the entire time." So she explained that it's about your body's temperature regulation while you sleep. When your temperature fluctuates all night — hot then cold then hot again — your nervous system stays in fight-or-flight mode. And when your nervous system is in stress mode, your body never actually recovers even though you're asleep. So you might sleep 8 hours straight but your body spent those 8 hours in survival mode instead of rest mode. And that's why you wake up more tired than when you went to bed — your body didn't recharge, it just ran on stress all night. She said this gets worse for women after menopause because our temperature regulation is already unstable. Like hot flashes at 2am, throwing blankets off, pulling them back on, waking up drenched or freezing. But even women who don't have obvious sleep disruptions are dealing with this temperature chaos. It’s the root cause of all these symptoms. So your body is trying to regulate it’s temperature while you’re using bedding that doesn’t aid in that process at all. In fact, it makes it harder. And when the bedding can't help to keep your temperature consistent, your nervous system never gets the signal to relax. Even if you can still fall asleep, the sleep quality is bad. And that’s the reason you’re exhausted during the day. You never get the deep restorative sleep where your body actually recharges for the next day. Which is fair right? Imagine trying to charge your phone but your power is out. Sure the charger will be attached to your phone for 8 hours, but it’s never going to actually charge your phone. From the outside it might look like the phone is being charged. But when you try to use it, you realise it doesn’t work. And you've been doing this for years without even knowing that's what was happening. So she explained that women need bedding with the right weight distribution so their body temperature can be regulated while they sleep. The key is keeping your body temperature stable all night so your nervous system can finally relax. But most bedding is either too thin or traps heat in all the wrong places. So it causes your temperature to spike and drop constantly. And every time your temperature changes, your nervous system kicks back into stress mode. And she said the only solution for this in women my age is to use bedding that’s designed specifically to regulate temperature based on your environment. It keeps you warm when you're cold but doesn't trap heat so you never wake up sweating. And the weight distribution keeps you covered and grounded without feeling suffocating. But she said most bedding companies stopped making comforters this way decades ago because they cost too much to produce. You need ones that are built specifically for temperature regulation so that they actually work for post-menopausal women. And I'm sitting there thinking... so I've been blaming my age but really my body just hasn't rested in years? I thought the problem was me but it was just bad bedding keeping my body in stress mode every single night? "So what do I do now when I'm already 56 and exhausted all the time?" And she said the good news is your body can still rest properly once you give it the right conditions. So she recommended the Boho Bed Comforter. They're designed with temperature regulation technology that's actually strong enough for post-menopausal women to feel the difference. She said that’s the exact comforter that she’s seen the highest success rate with for her patients, and I believe her since she's the expert. Like a lot of younger women might be able to feel rested with regular bedding, but women 55+ NEED proper temperature regulation to get the rest they need and break out of their bodies’ chronically exhausted state. So I ordered it thinking okay, I'm really trying this now, no more just accepting exhaustion. And I told myself "you're going to give your body a chance to actually rest for once." Like I didn't expect miracles, I just wanted one morning where I didn't wake up already tired. It arrived three days later. I threw it on the bed and just let it fall however it wanted. And that night I got in and pulled it up over me. Like I wasn't holding my breath or anything, but I was hoping something would be different. And the first night I woke up at 7:30am and realized I'd slept straight through. And when I opened my eyes I didn't feel that immediate dread of dragging myself out of bed. Like I just felt... awake. But I didn't get too excited because one good night could just be coincidence. So night two, same thing. And I woke up with enough energy to make a real breakfast instead of just grabbing coffee or making something light because I couldn't imagine using any more energy than I needed to. Like I actually stood at the stove and cooked french toast for my husband and I. Eggs, bread, sugar…everything. I actually enjoyed cooking it too. And I realized I hadn't done that in probably two years. But I was still cautious because we'd only been doing this for a few days. Like what if this wears off next week and I'm back to falling asleep at 7pm? But week two I cleaned out the garage on a Wednesday. My husband came home from work and just stood there staring at me. And he said "what are you doing?" Like he couldn't believe I had the energy to tackle the garage in the middle of the week. And I told him "I actually feel awake for the first time in years." By the end of the first week I stopped needing a nap after lunch. So I started going for walks in the afternoon instead of collapsing on the couch. And my neighbor said "I haven't seen you out walking in forever." Like even she'd noticed I'd been hibernating. Week three my daughter came over for coffee on a Saturday morning. And we sat at the kitchen table talking until almost noon. So she looked at me and said "Mom, don’t take this the wrong way but you seem so much more present than you used to. What changed?" And I told her about the bedding and she just looked confused. Like she couldn't wrap her head around bedding being the reason I had energy again. But she said "whatever you're doing, keep doing it. You seem like yourself again. I haven’t seen you like this in years." And last weekend my granddaughter asked if I could come to her soccer game. I said yes without even thinking about whether I'd have energy. I didn’t realise what I’d just done until I was already at the game. I felt proud of myself. Everything was finally starting to click. And I stayed the whole game. Stood on the sidelines. Cheered. Didn't sit down once. Like my daughter kept glancing over at me like she was checking if I was okay. After the game my granddaughter ran up and hugged me and said "Grandma you saw my goal!" And I realized how many things I'd been missing just because I had no energy to show up. My husband saw the changes too. He seemed happier about it than anyone else. "I was getting worried about you. You finally look alive again… it’s good to see that spark after so long.” And I told him "I just needed my body to actually rest instead of running on stress for 8 hours every night." And you’ll never guess what happened next. Another woman from my book club who's 64 mentioned last week that she's exhausted all the time too. She said she's tried vitamins and doctor visits and nothing works. I sent her the link and told her "your body just needs to actually rest at night." Three weeks later she called me while crying and said she has energy again for the first time in years. She said she wished she'd known about this years ago instead of just accepting that exhaustion was her new normal. Not finding out about this earlier took years off her life. It took years of mine too. Precious time I’ll never get back. And it’s not just the time that you lose. It’s everything that happens during that time. It’s the relationships that become weaker because you don’t have the energy to put effort in. It’s you not being able to enjoy spending time with the people you love because all you can think about is sleep. It’s you always feeling embarrassed when you see other women who always look like they’re full of energy while you struggle to keep your eyes open in the middle of afternoon. So if you're always exhausted and want to finally stop blaming it on your age, you need to give your body the rest that it needs. I’ll put the link to the Boho Bed Comforter here so you can check it out. I’m usually very skeptical about products that claim to fix things but I’m only sharing this because it actually worked for me. My body gets the rest that it needs and I actually feel like myself again. I hope my story helps someone out here! Here’s the link:
