Morton County is developing a Historic Preservation Program and Ordinance in partnership with the State Historical Society of North Dakota (SHSND) through the federal Certified Local Government (CLG) Program, authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act. As part of this effort, the County is establishing a Historic Preservation Commission to identify, evaluate, and protect Morton County’s historic, cultural, archaeological, and scenic resources. The proposed Morton County Historic Preservation Commission will: • Advise the County on preservation policy and planning • Conduct and oversee surveys of historic and cultural resources • Review proposed changes to historic properties (Certificates of Appropriateness) • Promote public education and community engagement • Coordinate with SHSND and federal preservation programs Morton County’s preservation effort reflects the diversity of its landscape and heritage, including rural agricultural and ranching landscapes, historic buildings / structures / points of distinction, scenic and cultural landscapes, transportation heritage corridors (such as the Old Red / Old Ten Scenic Byway), and community heritage. This initiative will include public meetings across Morton County to gather input and support transparency. Your participation is strongly encouraged.
