For seventeen years, my four brothers hated me for surviving the birth that killed our mother - but when I asked them to sign away their guardianship, they refused to let me go. I was born after our mother was assaulted, and she died bringing me into the world. To Damian, Adrian, Tobias, and Marcus, I was never their sister. I was the reason she never came home. For seventeen years, I swallowed every insult: prick, bad luck, gold digger. When a girl at school wrapped her hands around my throat, I hid the bruises. Why ask for protection from men who wished I had never existed? Then I placed the guardianship papers on Damian's desk. "Sign them. In three days, I'll be gone." His eyes dropped to the marks on my neck. "Who did this to you?" I almost laughed. "Why do you care now?" Suddenly, the brothers who had ignored me wanted names. They wanted revenge. They wanted to call me family. Then Damian dealt the final blow: he couldn't sign. Their father - the man who could barely look at me - had secretly taken back my guardianship. My family spent years pushing me away. Now they refuse to let me go. ———————— "These are the papers you asked for." Gabriel dropped the stack on the table in front of her. "Thanks, bro." Elena smiled. They were eating lunch in the cafeteria, trays pushed together, the noise of the room around them. Her day had gone fine so far. After last night's talk with her brother, she'd had zero contact with any of them this morning — she'd slipped out of the house way before school started just so she wouldn't have to look at them. "So what's the plan once you get the signature?" Gabriel asked, sipping his coke. "Honestly? No idea. I've got part-time jobs, but it's not enough for a rented place. And it'll be even harder to find one until I'm officially eighteen." She sighed. Once he signed, she was on her own. Really on her own. "You could stay with us. You know that. But your ego won't let you, and it doesn't matter anyway, because I'd wear you down until you said yes." He aimed a sickly-sweet smile at her. Elena smacked the back of his head. "We'll see about that." She was only ever this playful with him, because she knew he'd never hurt her. "I've got class, so bye!" She started gathering her things. "That's the price of taking AP everything," he said. "Just be grateful. You can be dumb as a rock and at least your friend's the smart one." She smirked. "That's why Dad likes you more than me," Gabriel pouted. She laughed and headed off to class with the grin still on her face. Moments like that were the only good thing she had. She knew it. "Look at that. The creepy nerd's finally cracked too. Grinning like a freak." Camilla — the school's reigning bimbo— laughed, her little crew laughing right along with her. Elena had taken her share of bullying. Bullying was too soft a word for it, though. It was straight-up physical abuse. It had started three years ago, when she was the new kid here. Back then it was a punch here and there. Now it was kicks, punches, bruises everywhere. "Just leave me alone, Camilla." Her eyes gave away how scared she was. "Oh, so the bimbo talks now. Girls, let's show her what happens when she thinks she can give orders." Camilla sneered and grabbed her by the throat, dragging her acrylic nails across her skin, scratching as she went. Elena's vision started to swim from the lack of air. "Say one more word next time and see what happens." Camilla let go and walked off. Elena gasped, sucking in everything she could, and dropped onto her knees. Just this year. After that she'd be safe. …… She was home now. Washed up, hair dried, buried in the biggest hoodie Gabriel had ever given her. She stole his hoodies out of his house all the time, because she felt safe inside them. She paced her room. Damian was home today. She could get his signature now, or she'd have to wait another whole week, since he was flying out on a business trip tonight. "It's now or never. I want out of this place as fast as I can. So do it." She thought it at herself like an order. She'd already covered the bruises on her neck with makeup. A few scratches still showed, but her hair was long enough to hide those. He won't notice. And even if he does, he'll ignore it. I'm sure of that. She opened her door and walked to his study. In seventeen years she'd never once had the nerve to go into her eldest brother's room. He'd never said anything awful to her — but he'd never stopped his brothers from saying it either. That made it worse, somehow. For my freedom. She knocked. "Come in." The voice from the other side was cold. Elena poked her head around the door. Her two oldest brothers were both working — Damian at the desk, Adrian standing beside him, passing him papers. Their eyes went wide when they saw her. First time she'd ever set foot in their office. "Um, I ha—ve some—" Adrian cut her off. "Just spit out what you want. We don't have time for this." She sighed. Of course. She walked up to the desk and set the documents in front of Damian. Damian's brows pulled together. He'd never gotten a single complaint letter about her from the school. He didn't understand what he was looking at. "What's this?" Adrian asked. "They're my custody annulment papers." Both their heads snapped toward her, eyes wide, demanding an explanation. "You probably don't know, but I turn eighteen in exactly nine months. I want out before that." "What is this? Is it a joke? I've never heard of papers like this." Adrian's voice carried more than anger — something else she couldn't name. "I just need you to sign them. After that, my custody isn't yours anymore. You won't have to be my guardian." She said it with her chin up. They'd never heard her say this much at once. She'd always been quiet, absorbing whatever they threw at her. Looking at her now, both of them could see it. She'd changed. She'd grown up. "Where did you get this?" Damian asked. "That's not important." She said it flat. "You're telling me now. Where did you get it?" he snapped. "A friend's father. He's a lawyer." She rubbed her neck without thinking, and a hiss slipped out of her mouth. She dropped her hand fast. Both their eyes snapped straight to her neck. Nice going, Elena. Now explain that. "What happened to your neck?" "Nothing." Adrian's brows drew together. He came around the desk to her side. Elena's eyes went wide as he lifted her hair and pushed it back, exposing the mess of bruises underneath. "Who did this to you?" Damian was up out of his chair, leaning in to see. "Nobody. You don't need to worry about me." Her voice shook. Two grown men, two of her brothers, and she felt small in front of them. "This is bad. You need a doctor for this." Adrian's voice had gone soft. Her eyes snapped to him. He'd never used that tone on her before. "I'll go. But please, Damian — sign these before your trip, so I can move out in three days." Her eyes were full of helplessness. She had nine months until finals. If she left this month, that gave her seven months to study for the scholarship exam. "Fine. But I need to read it first, so it'll take a while. I'll get back to you." Does he think I'd try to defraud him? He probably does. "Okay. Sure. I'll get out of your way then." Freedom was written all over her face when she smiled. She headed for the door. "Hold on. Let me call Tobias. He'll treat that." Adrian's eyes were stern, an order, not a suggestion. She sighed. She knew she couldn't argue, so she nodded. Adrian left to call him, and that left only the youngest and the oldest in the office. The two of them sat on the couch, and the eldest never took his eyes off her. Elena had never known what to do with being watched, so she wrapped her arms around herself and made herself as small as possible, like a lost puppy. "Did you get that at school? Or—" "No! It was an accident." She cut him off before he could finish. "I meant your wristband." He was pointing at the president's band. Their school ran clubs, and she was president of the music club — she loved playing violin. Every club had its own band. Nobody at school knew about Camilla. She'd never given a single clue, and with her quiet, responsible reputation, no one suspected a thing. Not even Gabriel. Her club members were happy with how she ran things, so they left her alone. "Oh, this? It's the president's band. Music club." "You're the president?" Damian raised an eyebrow. "Yes." "Impressive." "Now I want a name. Who hurt you? That's the easy way. If you won't give me one, I'll go find them myself." His fist clenched. "It's fine, Damian. I'm a guest here for a few more days, that's all. You don't need to stick your nose into my problems when you've got so much on your plate. And I know exactly what I am to this family — I'm the only reason it's hurting, the reason it's twisted into what it is today. I'm still sorry that I'm the one who lived and Mrs. Castellano didn't. So don't force yourself into anything on my account. I figured out a long time ago that you can't accept me as family. I don't blame you, or any other Castellano, for that." She rubbed her eyes to stop the tears. Damian's eyes went wide for the second time that day. He'd never expected this girl to turn into someone so mature. Then she felt them — the other two brothers in the room. She'd wanted to say all of that to him for so long, but she'd never had the guts. Did they hear it too? The dead silence answered her. Tobias walked over to the couch and gently gathered her hair into a tie so he could see. When he bent toward her neck, his face went cold and his eyes burned. "Did someone try to choke you to death?" he asked. The question made the whole room heavier. Elena sighed. She couldn't hide it anymore — not with hand marks that obvious now that the makeup was gone. "I don't know why you're all so angry. I'm sorry for causing trouble. I'll take care of it myself in my room. You don't have to." She'd never seen her brothers care about her before, so their concern only felt like one more thing she owed them. "Sit down." Tobias's voice left no room. She sighed and sat. He cleaned the wounds and bandaged her neck. At least it didn't hurt anymore. After that, nobody said anything. "Can you give me the papers at dinner tonight, Damian?" she said, standing up to leave. "I'll try." Elena frowned. Why was it taking him this long to sign a few pages? "Okay then." She went to her room, with no idea what she'd just set off. She stood in front of the mirror and smiled at herself. "Step one, done."
