Ad text
The to-do list is every ADHDer’s worst nightmare! The idea of an endless stream of things to catch up on and loose ends to tie up sounds like hell – even though it’s just everyday life. We keep trying to clear our lists, as if there was a reward waiting for us on the other side. Or some better world, where everything will finally be the way we want it to be. We get angry at ourselves for not being able to empty the laundry basket once and for all, while neurotypicals seem oddly at peace with it. They know that ADULTHOOD = AN ENDLESS STRING OF NEVERENDING TASKS You clean – it gets dirty again. You reply to an email – a new one comes in. They’re not waiting for everything to be done. Their brains tolerate things the way they are. But we can get more comfortable with this idea too. Not neurotypically, but in our own way. Maybe we can learn to live with an imperfect system, a full laundry basket, an open loop and the discomfort that comes with it. The tasks on our to-do list never end, because they’re not meant to. And maybe that feeling of calm we’re looking for isn’t waiting at the bottom of the laundry basket at all. Maybe it’s already here – somewhere between a dirty sock and an unpaid bill and we just haven’t learned how to notice it yet?
