If you’re scared of finding out your risk of getting Alzheimer’s/Dementia, let me walk you through what the process was like for me. Comment “risk” if you want more information on how to test, understand and lower your risk of dementia covered insurance. As someone whose grandmother has dementia and who works as a dementia educator, it’s embarrassing to admit that I’ve let my health really slide. That’s why I decided to get my dementia risk tested and here are the steps I went through to do it. Step 1: I went to betterbrain dot com Step 2: I signed up for a blood draw to test my genetic, biomarker and lifestyle risk factors. Step 3: I got my blood drawn at home. Step 4: I met with my brain health coach, Wendy, to explain my results and give me a personalized plan built for my lifestyle to lower my risk. (Brain Health coaching at BetterBrain is covered by most insurance and the essential and genetic lab tests start at $89 are really worth it) Here is what I learned about my risk factors and my action plan: My Risk Factors: 1. My APOE4 was E3/E3 which meant I had an average genetic risk of developing Alzheimer’s. E2 means you have genetic protection, E3 means average risk and E4 means you have a higher genetic risk of getting Alzheimer’s. 2. My inflammation markers of HSCRP and homocysteine are show showing high inflammation which increases my risk. A poor diet, lack of exercise, and high stress are agitating these markers. 3. Other metrics that asurprised me were high triglycerides and low iron. My Action Plan (with help from Wendy, my Brain Coach): 1. I am aiming for consistent strength training, high-intensity (HIIT) cardio 3x a week 2. I want to improve inflammation, b vitamins and iron status though food and supplements. I am now taking methylated B-complex to improve B12 levels and lower Homocysteine. 3. I am trying to prioritize restorative sleep by setting boundaries with phone use at night. If you want to understand your own risk and have a personalized plan to lower it, visit BetterBrain dot com to learn more and see if your insurance covers the coaching cost. #dementia
