1:1 My husband tried to replace my eggs with his mistress' during our IVF cycle. I caught him in the act and swapped them back. I also swapped his sperm for my late fiancé's. 25 years later, his mistress showed up at my door, screaming that my daughter was hers. My daughter Soraya and I walked through the front door of the Torrance Estate, fresh off our medical research trip to Switzerland. We froze the second we stepped inside. The living room was packed wall to wall with distant Torrance relatives. I thought we'd walked in on a reading of the patriarch's will, not a regular Tuesday evening. The most jarring sight was Coraline Veyra, my husband Caspian's lifelong mistress, curled up on the center of the couch, sobbing into a lace handkerchief. Caspian sat beside her, his arm wrapped tight around her shoulders, murmuring soft comforts into her hair. My mother-in-law Elowen sat in the main armchair, her face tight with unspoken displeasure, saying nothing. I raised an eyebrow, rolled my suitcase to the side, and looked directly at Caspian. ""Special occasion? The house is certainly lively today."" Soraya stepped up beside me, crossing her arms over her chest, a look of cold disgust on her face as she stared at Coraline. She already knew exactly who this woman was. Before Caspian could speak, Coraline spotted Soraya and launched herself off the couch, lunging toward her with outstretched arms. ""My sweet baby girl! I'm your mother!"" Soraya dodged her with sharp, effortless grace, her nose wrinkling like she'd stepped in something rotten. She stepped back, her voice ice cold and unshakable. ""My mother's name is Lyra Corvin."" My heart swelled with pride. This girl was my greatest accomplishment, through and through. I squeezed Soraya's hand to steady her, then stepped forward and slapped Coraline hard across the face. The sharp crack of the impact echoed through the silent living room. ""Don't you dare claim other people's children as your own."" My voice was icy, my gaze sharp enough to cut steel. Caspian shot to his feet, helping Coraline upright, and pointed a shaking finger at me, roaring with rage. ""Lyra Corvin, have you lost your mind? How dare you lay a hand on Coraline?"" He raised his hand to strike me. Soraya moved faster than he could blink, stepping between us and slapping him across the face with equal force. ""You dare raise a hand to my mother?"" Her voice wasn't loud, but it carried a weight of authority that silenced the entire room. Caspian froze, red-faced and furious, and raised his hand again to hit her. Coraline grabbed his arm, fake sobs still wracking her body. ""Caspian, don't! That's our daughter!"" Her sickeningly sweet, performative maternal act made my stomach turn. Caspian dropped his hand, glaring daggers at Soraya. ""If it wasn't for your real mother, I'd teach you a lesson you'd never forget."" Soraya let out a cold, sharp laugh. ""I'd like to see you try."" Her sharp, unflinching gaze was the spitting image of mine when I was her age. I couldn't have been prouder. One of the elder Torrance relatives cleared his throat, trying to calm the chaos. ""Enough! All of you."" His deep voice carried the authority of the patriarch he'd once been. The room fell quiet, every eye turning to him. He looked at Caspian, his brow furrowed. ""Caspian, you called all of us here. What exactly is this about?"" Caspian took a deep breath, like he was summoning all his courage. He pulled Coraline closer, his face set in a look of fake solemn devotion. ""I have an important announcement to make today."" He paused, his gaze sweeping across the room, finally landing on Soraya and me. I stared back at him, completely calm, waiting to see what ridiculous lie he'd spin next. ""Soraya... she's not Lyra's biological daughter."" 2:2 His words were quiet, but they hit the room like a bomb. Soraya's head snapped toward me, shock flashing in her eyes. I gave her a subtle look, telling her to stay calm and wait. The relatives around us erupted into quiet whispers, like sharks catching the scent of blood in the water. ""When we did IVF, all those years ago..."" Caspian paused, feigning discomfort and shame. ""The doctors told us Lyra's egg quality was poor. I swapped them out for Coraline's to spare her the heartbreak of not being a mother."" This spineless, idiotic man had snuck around behind my back to commit fraud, and now he was trying to paint himself as a loving husband. I almost laughed out loud. Caspian's gaze landed on me, malicious and expectant, waiting for me to fly off the handle and lose control. I stayed perfectly calm, and he was forced to keep going with his little performance. ""I called all of you here today to witness this."" He looked at Coraline, his voice soft and adoring. ""For Soraya to finally meet and accept her real mother."" The room exploded again. ""Of course, Soraya needs to be with her real mother!"" ""That barren woman has held the spot for long enough. It's time she stepped down."" ""Lyra's hoarded control of Torrance Group for years. Now the truth is out, she needs to be removed from the board immediately."" I listened to their sniping, a cold smile tugging at my lips. These greedy, spineless relatives had been pushed out of company management by me over the years, left with nothing but annual dividends. They'd hated me for it ever since. Now they saw an opportunity to claw their way back into power, and they were practically salivating over it. Soraya felt the shift in the room and squeezed my hand tighter. I spoke up, my voice quiet but unshakable, cutting through the noise. ""Soraya came from my body. She will only ever be my child."" Coraline put on a look of sad resignation, her voice thick with fake tears. ""How long are you going to lie to yourself?"" I wasn't lying to myself. Soraya was, without a shadow of a doubt, my child. Caspian and Coraline really thought they'd outsmarted me. They had no idea what had really happened that day at the fertility clinic. 25 years prior, Caspian had severe asthenospermia, and we'd decided to pursue IVF. The night before the embryo was created, I'd caught him bribing a nurse to swap my frozen eggs with Coraline's. I'd heard him on the phone with her, giddy with excitement that he'd finally secured his legacy with the woman he actually loved. I hadn't made a scene. I'd turned around, walked straight to the head doctor, and handed him a check for $100,000 to swap my eggs back. I'd also asked him to replace Caspian's sperm sample with that of my late fiancé. On the day the embryo was created, Caspian and I had stood side by side, watching the ""miracle"" unfold under the microscope. He'd been deliriously happy, convinced he was about to have a child with the woman he loved. I'd watched his stupid, grinning face, and barely held back my laughter. For 25 years, I'd watched him dance around like a clown, fawning over Soraya, thinking he'd outsmarted me. He had no idea he'd been raising another man's child for a quarter of a century. Caspian's voice cut through my memories, sharp with mocking contempt. ""Quit being a stubborn mule. Soraya might have come from your body, but the eggs weren't yours. Her real mother is Coraline."" My voice was calm, but laced with deliberate provocation. ""Are you living in a fantasy world?"" ""If you don't believe me, we'll take a DNA test!"" Caspian's voice was firm, unshakable in his delusion. ""I'm also filing for divorce. I've put up with your obsessive, clingy behavior for 25 years, and I've been more than generous to you."" A sickening smile spread across his face as he said the words. He'd clearly been planning this for a long time. Generous? I'd married him 25 years ago, and I'd been a widow in all but name ever since. I'd raised our daughter alone while he ran off with Coraline. I'd built Torrance Group from a crumbling, debt-ridden mess into a billion-dollar empire while he partied his life away in luxury resorts. He was wrong about one thing, though. I'd never married him because I loved him. I'd married him for the title of Torrance matriarch, for the access it gave me to take control of the company. And now, Torrance Group was entirely in my hands. Caspian had no more use to me. ""Divorce? Fine by me."" I shrugged, completely unbothered. ""But the DNA test is unnecessary. I know for a fact Soraya is my child."" Soraya looked at me, her gaze steady and unwavering. ""Mom, I believe you."" Caspian and Coraline both panicked immediately. ""Soraya, how can you not believe your own father?"" Soraya ignored him completely, pressing herself closer to my side. The front door slammed open at that moment. A boy around college age burst into the room, heading straight for Soraya. ""Hi, sis!"" Every single person in the room froze. 3:3 A surprise mother was one thing, but a surprise brother? I looked at the boy, his features a near-perfect match for Coraline's, and the pieces clicked into place. This was Caspian and Coraline's secret love child. They'd hidden him well, for 24 years, without me ever catching wind of it. This show was about to get a lot more interesting than I'd anticipated. Elowen sat up straighter in her chair, her gaze sharp as she looked at the boy. ""Caspian. What is the meaning of this?"" The room went completely, deathly silent again. The boy's eyes were red-rimmed, like he was on the verge of tears. ""My name is Jasper. I... I've always known about you."" His voice was shaky, stumbling over his words. He snuck a quick glance at me, then ducked his head down, like he was scared I'd yell at him. ""Mom... my mom talks about you all the time. Says how smart and beautiful you are."" Coraline started sobbing right on cue, dabbing at her eyes with her handkerchief, her shoulders shaking. ""Soraya, my sweet baby girl, I've missed you so much these 25 years."" She lifted her head, her eyes swimming with fake tears, like she'd suffered the greatest injustice in the world. ""Jasper... he's missed you too. We've snuck to watch you so many times over the years."" Jasper nodded quickly, rushing to add to her lie. ""It's true! I go to the same university as you. I enrolled just to be close to you."" He pulled a thick stack of photos out of his pocket, holding them out to Soraya with trembling hands. ""These are all pictures of you. I... I took them when I saw you around campus."" Soraya flipped through the stack quickly, her face twisting with disgust. The photos showed her at her graduation, at her dance recitals, at her debate tournaments. She'd had a stranger stalking her, photographing her every move, for years. Caspian stepped up to Elowen, pointing at Jasper, his voice heavy. ""Mom, he is our heir. With all the family here today, I'm asking you to recognize him officially."" Caspian wasn't as stupid as he looked. He knew that after the old patriarch died, Elowen was the only one with real authority in the Torrance family. He'd called all the relatives here to pressure her into accepting Jasper into the family. He was convinced that if Elowen agreed, I'd be powerless to stop it. He'd watched me defer to Elowen for 25 years, and thought I did it out of obedience. He had no idea Elowen and I had been on the same page this entire time. Jasper was quick on the uptake, turning to Elowen and bowing deeply. ""Grandma!"" Elowen looked at Jasper, then back at me, her expression complicated. She didn't answer him. I knew she was worried about putting me in a tough spot. I spoke up, breaking the tense silence, to spare her the discomfort. ""Caspian, getting this bastard recognized by the family so he can inherit the Torrance fortune is your real goal, isn't it? Why drag Soraya into this mess?"" I glanced at Soraya, sharing a quick, knowing look. ""Even if Soraya wasn't my biological child, she'd still be the sole heir to everything I own. ""Every property, every stock, every fund, and my 20% stake in Torrance Group will all be left to her and her alone."" ""Soraya, with all that on the table, would you rather stay with me or go with your father and this woman who claims to be your mother?"" My smart, quick-witted girl caught on immediately. She threw herself into my arms, nuzzling my arm, her voice bright and clear. ""With that boy, my dad is not going to leave me any of his money. Of course, I'm staying with you."" I couldn't have been prouder. She'd turned their entire game on its head with a single sentence. Coraline's eyes lit up like a Christmas tree the second I announced I'd leave everything to Soraya. She knew exactly how much I was worth. The jewelry, the real estate, the private investments were all a massive fortune on their own. The 20% stake in Torrance Group was a gold mine beyond her wildest dreams. Raw, unhinged greed was written all over her face, no attempt to hide it. She leaned in and whispered something in Caspian's ear. ""When your grandfather died, he split his 60% of Torrance Group four ways. 20% to Lyra, 20% to you, 10% to Soraya, and only 10% to you. ""If Lyra signs her shares over to Soraya, we can manipulate Soraya into handing them over to us. You would control 40% of the company. ""Right now, we need to force Lyra to sign over every last cent she has, get her out of the house with nothing, and turn Soraya against her."" Caspian thought it over, and his face lit up. He turned to Soraya, putting on his most loving, fatherly face. ""Soraya, Jasper is a boy. He can make his own way in the world. He won't fight you for any of my money. I'll leave everything I have to you."" He paused, adding a single, non-negotiable condition. ""On one condition. You take the DNA test with Coraline. If it proves you two are mother and daughter, you accept her as your mom and treat her with the love and respect she deserves."" Soraya glanced at me out of the corner of her eye. I gave her the tiniest, almost imperceptible nod. ""Fine."" Soraya agreed immediately, but she had a clever condition of her own. ""Before we go to the DNA lab, though, you and Mom have to come with me to the notary's office first. ""Every asset you own, except $5,000 each for living expenses, gets signed over to me, no strings attached."" I cheered internally. This girl was brilliant. She knew better than anyone that promises meant nothing. Only what was in writing, signed and notarized, was real. The greedy relatives in the room practically vibrated with excitement. They'd figured out what Coraline and Caspian were planning, and they saw their own chance to get rich. If Caspian controlled Torrance Group, they'd be able to weasel their way back into the company, leeching off the fortune like the parasites they were. ""Yes! This is the right way to handle this!"" One of the elder relatives led the charge, cheering them on. ""I'll call the notary right now! He's a close friend of the family!"" Another pulled out his phone, already dialing. The room erupted into chaos, everyone rushing around like they were at a wedding, not a family betrayal. Elowen pulled me aside while they were busy, her voice tight with worry. ""Sweet girl, are you sure about this? Signing over all your assets? Think this through again."" I smiled and shook my head, reassuring her gently. ""Don't worry. I know exactly what I'm doing."" Elowen had always known how sharp and capable I was. She saw the calm confidence in my eyes, and didn't push it any further. With the relatives' enthusiastic help, every asset Caspian and I owned, save for the $5,000 living allowance each, was signed over to Soraya at the notary's office that same afternoon. In the notary's office, Caspian and Coraline stared at Soraya with adoring, greedy eyes, already picturing the day they'd control Torrance Group through her. They were grinning like fools, living in their little fantasy. I watched them daydream, then looked at my daughter, now a billionaire overnight, and smiled as well. But Caspian's loss wasn't enough for me. I was going to make Coraline pay for everything she'd done, too. 4:4 ""Coraline, you say you love Soraya more than anything in the world. Aren't you going to show it?"" I spoke casually, my gaze sweeping over her perfectly made-up, fake innocent face. ""I've spent millions raising her for you over the last 25 years. I don't want compensation for myself, but you should give that money to Soraya. ""After all, she's the one you claim to love more than anything."" Soraya jumped in immediately, piling on the pressure. ""Coraline, you've been with my dad for 25 years. You must have a few million saved up, right? We're still at the notary's office. ""Why don't you show me how much you love me? Otherwise, I might start to think you only want to be my mom for the Torrance fortune."" Coraline's face went rigid, caught between a rock and a hard place. If she gave up the money, she'd lose her life savings. If she didn't, Soraya would see right through her act, and her entire plan would fall apart. In the end, greed won out. She gritted her teeth, pulled a bank card out of her bag, and handed it to Soraya. ""Of course, I love you, Soraya. There's $5 million on this card. It's every cent I've saved over the last 15 years."" Soraya grabbed the card without hesitation, calling the notary over to document the gift officially. Coraline stood there smiling, but her smile was twisted with pain, like someone had just carved a piece out of her. Caspian chose the DNA testing lab himself. He was convinced I'd try to tamper with the results, so he picked the most prestigious, AABB-accredited forensic DNA lab in the country. I almost laughed at his misplaced arrogance. He thought he was being clever, but he was walking straight into my trap. After the lab technician drew blood from me, Coraline, and Soraya, I smiled and asked them to draw Caspian's blood too, for a paternity test. Caspian stared at me like I'd lost my mind. ""Lyra, have you lost it? Soraya is unquestionably my daughter."" I smirked, my tone playful and dangerous. ""We're already here. Might as well get it all done at once, right?"" Soraya didn't fully understand why I was doing it, but she trusted me completely. She crossed her arms and stared Caspian down, demanding he do the test. Caspian was wrapped around Soraya's finger, desperate to stay in her good graces. He agreed, huffing and puffing, but sat down to have his blood drawn anyway. We walked out of the lab, and Jasper showed up with a huge bouquet of flowers, right on cue. ""Soraya!"" He called out to her warmly, holding the flowers out, leaning in for a hug. Soraya looked like she'd swallowed a bug, shoving him away hard. ""Don't touch me."" The boy was half a head taller than Soraya, handsome enough, but there was a slimy, unsettling energy about him. ""Soraya, he's your brother!"" Coraline rushed to scold her, her voice sickly sweet. ""Family needs to love each other!"" Soraya rolled her eyes. ""Let's not call each other family until the DNA results come back, yeah?"" ""I won't keep you all from your little family bonding time."" I spoke calmly, my tone flat. ""Caspian, let's go to the county clerk's office and finalize the divorce right now."" Since we had no assets to split and no custody battle to fight, we didn't even need a formal divorce agreement. We walked in, filled out the paperwork, and walked out with finalized divorce papers 20 minutes later. Coraline's eyes went wide with unbridled joy. She clearly hadn't expected me to give up the marriage so easily, convinced I'd cling to Caspian like a lifeline. But when she saw Soraya standing firmly by my side, her joy faded into bitter jealousy. Soraya left to pull the car around, and Coraline finally had a chance to corner me alone. She leaned in, her voice sharp with smug malice. ""Lyra, Caspian never loved you. Do you know why he named her Soraya? Because it sounds similar to my name."" Caspian wrapped an arm around her, his face smug and triumphant. ""Once the DNA results come back, Soraya will come home to us. I'll be the rightful head of Torrance Group, like I was always meant to be."" Jasper dropped his innocent, shy act too, sneering at me with arrogant confidence. ""All the money is my sister's now. Once the results come back, you'll be begging on the streets for change."" I didn't bother responding to their childish taunts. Caspian's face darkened when I didn't rise to the bait, his true colors finally showing. ""You've controlled Torrance Group for long enough. It's my turn to run the company. ""You were only ever using Soraya to get your hands on the company."" I let out a cold laugh. ""Guilty. So what?"" Caspian didn't even bother to deny it, his face twisted with greed. ""Then I'll wait to see if you're actually lucky enough to pull it off."" My voice was ice cold. They thought they'd already won, their little plan foolproof. They had no idea they'd already lost before the game had even started. 5:5 A few days later, I was in my office at Torrance Group finalizing a merger deal, when the reception called to tell me Jasper had stormed into the building. He'd thrown the general manager out of his office, plopped down in the leather executive chair, and propped his feet up on the desk. He was screaming that his sister was the company's chairman, so he was the rightful general manager. The staff were too scared to stop him, but I had no such qualms. ""Throw him out of the building."" I nodded to the security guards standing by my office door. They stepped forward immediately, moving to grab Jasper. ""You dare touch me?!"" Jasper shot to his feet, screaming at the guards, his face red with rage. ""My sister is the chairman of this company! I'm her brother! You're all fired if you lay a hand on me!"" He turned on me next, spitting insults. ""You washed-up old hag! You've been kicked out of the Torrance family! You have no right to give orders here!"" He shoved past the guards, lunging at me with his fist raised. He was completely out of control. The office door slammed open at that exact moment. ""What is going on here?"" Soraya stood in the doorway, her face cold with fury. ""Soraya! You're just in time!"" Jasper immediately dropped his aggressive act, putting on a hurt, victimized face. ""This horrible woman is having security throw me out!"" ""This is a place of business. You don't get to come in here and cause chaos."" Soraya's voice was ice, her gaze never leaving Jasper. ""And I'm not your sister."" ""Soraya, how can you talk to your brother like that?"" Coraline rushed into the office right behind her, her voice shrill with indignation. ""He's your flesh and blood! He's going to help you run this company! You're a young woman, you need a man from your family to back you up, or people will walk all over you."" Soraya let out a cold, sharp laugh. ""Throw them both out. Don't let them set foot in this building ever again."" Coraline dropped the sweet act entirely, starting to scream and thrash as the security guards grabbed her, refusing to let them touch her. ""I'm the mother of Torrance Group's heir! This company is mine! You can't throw me out!"" I smiled coldly. ""Get them out of here. Don't let them dirty the building."" The security guards knew exactly who was really in charge of the company. They dragged the screaming, flailing pair out of the building and tossed them onto the sidewalk outside. Coraline screamed over her shoulder as they were dragged away. ""Lyra Corvin! You just wait! The DNA results come out tomorrow! I'll make you get on your knees and beg me for a crumb of food!"" I watched her pathetic, flailing retreat, and called out to her calmly. ""Don't worry. I've been waiting for the results just as much as you have."" The day Coraline had been waiting for finally arrived. I woke up early that morning, taking my time to get dressed and do my makeup. I had to look my best to watch Coraline's entire world crumble around her. Elowen came with us to the lab, and Caspian had invited every single one of the meddling relatives to witness the big reveal. He clearly wanted as many people as possible to watch me be humiliated. How naive. He wanted everyone to laugh at me, but he was the one who was about to become the laughingstock of the entire family. Before the lab technician brought in the results, I looked at Caspian with a lazy, knowing smile. ""You picked this lab yourself. You won't dispute the results, no matter what they say, right?"" Caspian stood up straight, his voice confident and unshakable. ""Of course not. I'm a man of my word."" 6:6 I almost laughed out loud. He really had no idea what was coming for him. The lab technician hadn't even walked through the door yet, and Coraline was already putting on her performance. She curled up against Caspian's side, her voice soft and cloying. ""Caspian, once the results come out, our little family can finally be together, like we were always meant to be."" She shot me a vicious, triumphant look over his shoulder. I ignored her completely, turning to smile at Soraya. Soraya stared right back, her face completely calm, completely uninterested in Coraline's little performance. Coraline's smile faltered, embarrassed by the lack of reaction. She recovered quickly, turning back to Soraya, her voice sickly sweet. ""From now on, I'm your mom. Anything you want, anything you need, you just tell me. I'll get it for you, no matter what."" She pulled a small jewelry box out of her bag, holding it out to Soraya. ""This is a necklace I bought for you, a welcome home gift. Do you like it?"" Soraya didn't even glance at it, her voice cold and flat. ""I don't want it."" Coraline's smile froze on her face. Caspian jumped in quickly, trying to smooth over the awkward moment. ""Soraya, your mom is just trying to be kind..."" ""I don't want her kindness."" Soraya cut him off sharply. ""I only have one mom. And that's Lyra Corvin."" Warmth flooded my chest. My daughter would always stand by me, no matter what. The lab technician walked into the room right then, holding a sealed manila envelope with the test results. Coraline, Caspian, and Jasper all leaned forward, their eyes locked onto the envelope like starving wolves. They stared at it like it held the keys to the kingdom, to a lifetime of wealth and luxury. They looked at me like I was already defeated, already ruined. I could barely hold back my laughter. They had no idea the envelope held their worst nightmare, not their wildest dreams. The technician cleared his throat, breaking the tense silence. He opened the envelope, pulling out the first of the three reports. ""Based on the DNA comparison results, Ms. Coraline Veyra and Ms. Soraya Torrance...""
