AI in Nigeria in 2026: Is digital sovereignty being decided right before our eyes? Nigeria is becoming one of the driving forces of artificial intelligence in Africa. In 2025, the country launched its National AI Strategy (NAIS) with five clear pillars: infrastructure, ecosystem, sectoral adoption, ethics, and governance. We also saw the birth of M-ATLAS, Nigeria’s first homegrown multilingual large language model, capable of understanding and generating text fluently in Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, and Pidgin. The first AI-ready data centers are set to open in 2026 (MTN Genova, Equinix LG3, Airtel Nxtra, and Kasi Cloud projects). Nigeria’s AI market is projected to reach $434 million this year. 70% of the online population is already using generative tools—more than the global average. Large-scale programs such as 3MTT (3 million technical talents) and DL4ALL aim for 95% digital literacy by 2030. But behind these exciting numbers, an urgent question arises for us, the youth: Who will truly own our data, our energy, and our infrastructure? Because most of the incoming data centers are financed or operated by foreign giants, especially Chinese companies. And while we’re having fun using DeepSeek, we must ask ourselves: Are we building our future… or handing over the keys to that future to others? AI is moving at full speed. It’s up to us, the Nigerian youth, to ensure that this revolution happens with us, for us, and under our control. Digital sovereignty is not just a government issue. It’s our fight. #NigeriaAI #DeepSeek #DigitalSovereignty
