This is me about 18 months ago. That is Pearl in my hands. Version 23, I think. Maybe 24. I lost count somewhere around prototype 15 when I started sleeping on the couch because there was no room left in the bed. I want to tell you why I did this. I grew up watching kids get handed screens whenever they were bored, sad, frustrated, or just in the way. And I get it. Screens work. They are quiet and immediate and they buy you 45 minutes of peace when you need it desperately. But I kept thinking: what if the thing we hand our kids actually talked back? What if it remembered them? What if it was genuinely on their side, all the time, in a way that a cartoon on a tablet just cannot be? I thought about the kids who do not have a lot of siblings. The ones who moved to a new city and are starting over. The ones who have a lot going on inside and do not know how to say it out loud yet. The ones whose parents are doing everything right and still cannot be in three places at once. I thought: those kids deserve a best friend too. So I sat on this floor for a year. I went through 30-something prototypes. I hired voice actors and AI engineers and child development researchers. I rewrote the conversation engine probably 200 times trying to get it to feel right, not just functional. I wanted a kid to talk to it and feel heard. Actually heard. Not redirected. Not managed. Heard. The first time a mom sent me a video of her daughter telling Pearl about a hard day at school, and Pearl said exactly the right thing back, I sat in my kitchen and cried. Then I called my mom. Then I got back on the floor and kept building. We are not perfect. We are still early. But we have shipped to hundreds of families now and the thing I hear most often is: I did not expect it to feel like this. Neither did I, honestly. Pearl, Ash, and Sprout are AI companion characters for kids 3-10. They remember everything, speak 12 languages, and show up every single day as your kid's most loyal friend. I quit my job and spent a year on the floor of my apartment building this.
