I never set out to start a jewellery brand. I just wanted to share something beautiful — and somehow, it grew into something much bigger. It began with a seed. Literally. While living in Ecuador, I (Alison) found jewellery unlike anything I’d ever seen — bold, sculptural, and impossibly light. Each piece was carved from tagua, the seed of the tagua palm: a natural material so smooth it was once mistaken for animal ivory. But this ivory doesn’t cost lives — it protects elephants by offering a plant-based ivory alternative. Every tagua nut that’s gathered provides income for local families and gives the rainforest a reason to keep standing. The more we learned, the more it felt remarkable — beauty that gives back instead of taking away. I started bringing pieces home as gifts for friends and family. Every time, the reaction was the same — “It’s so light!” “It’s so different!” “Where did you find this?” That joy planted the idea that maybe this was something worth sharing. Before we returned to the UK, we’d already started talking to artisans and testing a few ideas — just to see if the spark could turn into something real. We took a leap. We set up a stall at our local market in Buckingham. We borrowed tables. We didn’t even have a gazebo — just hoping that it wouldn’t rain. The other traders laughed. But it didn’t rain. Instead, people came. They listened. They loved the jewellery. And we felt — finally — like we were onto something real. From there, we grew. Stalls at St Albans, Blenheim Palace, Chiswick House, the Bucks County Show. Real people, real conversations, real connection. Today, The Happy Elephant is still just us — a husband-and-wife team (Mark & Alison) keeping things personal, hands-on, and true to where it all began.
