Leaving aside the celestial spirits keeping watch and the Great Sage resting, we turn to the Bodhisattva Guanyin—the Merciful and Compassionate One of Mount Putuo in the South Sea, who brings salvation from suffering and answers all prayers. Having been invited by the Queen Mother of the West to the Flat Peach Banquet, she and her chief disciple, Huian, ascended to the Jade Pool Pavilion. There, they found a scene of desolation and disarray: the banquet tables were in shambles, and the few celestial immortals present—none of whom had taken their seats—were milling about in agitated discussion. After exchanging greetings with the immortals, the Bodhisattva listened as they recounted the events that had transpired. "Since there is no grand banquet and no wine is being served," she said, "you may all accompany me to see the Jade Emperor." The immortals gladly agreed. Upon arriving before the Hall of Universal Brightness, they found the Four Great Celestial Masters, the Barefoot Immortal, and others already there; these figures welcomed the Bodhisattva and explained that the Jade Emperor was deeply troubled, having dispatched celestial troops to capture the monster—a mission from which they had not yet returned. "I wish to see the Jade Emperor," the Bodhisattva said; "please convey this request." Celestial Master Qiu Hongji immediately entered the Hall of High Heaven to report her arrival and returned to usher her in. Inside, the Supreme Venerable Lord (Taishang Laojun) was seated in the place of honor, with the Queen Mother of the West seated behind him. The Bodhisattva led the group inside. After paying her respects to the Jade Emperor and exchanging greetings with the Supreme Venerable Lord and the Queen Mother, they all took their seats. He asked, "How is the Flat Peach Banquet proceeding?" The Jade Emperor replied, "We hold this banquet every year with great joy, but this year a demon monkey has caused chaos, rendering the invitation list meaningless." The Bodhisattva asked, "What is the origin of this demon monkey?" The Jade Emperor explained, "He was born from a stone egg on the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit in the Kingdom of Aolai, located in the Eastern Continent of Superior Body. Upon birth, golden rays shot from his eyes, piercing the celestial palaces. At first, I paid it no mind, but he later became a spirit, subduing dragons and tigers and striking his name from the Register of Death. The Dragon King and the King of Hell submitted memorials about him. I intended to capture him, but the Planet Venus advised, 'In the Three Realms, any creature with nine orifices can attain immortality.' So, seeking to cultivate talent, I summoned him to the celestial realm and appointed him 'Protector of the Horses' in the Imperial Stables. That fellow, however, disdained the low rank and rebelled against Heaven. I dispatched Heavenly King Li and Prince Nezha to subdue him, then issued a decree of pacification, summoning him back to appoint him 'Great Sage Equaling Heaven'—though it was a title without a salary. With no official duties, he wandered aimlessly. Fearing he might cause further trouble, I assigned him to oversee the Flat Peach Garden. Yet, he disregarded the rules and stole all the large peaches from the ancient trees. When the banquet was organized, he—holding no official stipend—was not invited; instead, he tricked the Barefoot Immortal, assumed his appearance to enter the feast, and devoured all the celestial delicacies and wine. He also stole Lord Laozi’s elixir and quantities of imperial wine to share with the monkeys on his mountain. Distressed by this, I deployed a hundred thousand heavenly troops to capture him using a net that covered the sky and earth. Yet, I have received no report today and do not know the outcome of the battle." Upon hearing this, the Bodhisattva immediately commanded the Pilgrim Huian, "Descend quickly from the celestial palace to the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit and gather intelligence on the military situation. If you encounter the enemy, lend a hand to the cause, and be sure to return with an accurate report." The Pilgrim Huian adjusted his robes, grasped his iron staff, rode a cloud out of the celestial gates, and headed straight for the mountain. He saw the celestial net—layer upon layer—encircling the mountain so tightly that not even a drop of water could pass through, while guards at the camp gates rang bells and shouted the watch. Huian stood his ground and called out, "I ask the celestial guards at the camp gate to convey a message. I am Muzha, the second son of Heavenly King Li, and the chief disciple of Guanyin of the South Sea; I have come specifically to gather intelligence on the military situation." The divine troops of the Five Sacred Mountains stationed at the camp immediately relayed the word to the main headquarters. Heavenly King Li issued an order to open the "Heavenly Net" formation and allow him entry. By this time, dawn was breaking in the east. Huian followed the signal-bearer inside; upon seeing the Four Heavenly Kings and Heavenly King Li, he bowed respectfully. After the salutations, Heavenly King Li asked, "My son, from where do you come?" Huian replied, "I accompanied the Bodhisattva to the Flat Peach Banquet. Finding the grand gathering desolate and the Jade Pool deserted, the Bodhisattva led the immortals—myself included—to see the Jade Emperor. The Emperor explained how you, Father, had descended to subdue the demon monkey, yet no report had been received and the outcome remained unknown; thus, the Bodhisattva commanded me to come here and ascertain the true situation." Heavenly King Li said, "We pitched camp here yesterday and sent the Nine Luminaries to issue a challenge; however, that fellow unleashed his supernatural powers, and the Nine Luminaries were all forced to retreat in defeat. Later, we led the troops out ourselves, and he arrayed his forces to meet us. Our hundred-thousand-strong celestial army engaged in a chaotic battle with him until nightfall, but he used a clone technique to drive us back. When we withdrew and took stock, we had captured only beasts such as wolves, insects, tigers, and leopards—not a single trace of the demon monkey himself. We have not yet gone out to battle today." Scarcely had he finished speaking when a messenger arrived from the camp gate to report, "The Great Sage has led a horde of monkey spirits outside and is shouting challenges." The Four Heavenly Kings, Heavenly King Li, and the Prince were just then deliberating on marching out their troops. Muzha said, "Father, acting on the Bodhisattva's instructions, I have come down to gather intelligence and offer assistance should a battle arise. I am ready to go now and see just what this 'Great Sage' is made of." The Heavenly King replied, "My son, having cultivated yourself under the Bodhisattva for these years, you surely possess some supernatural powers; do take care." The gallant prince swung his iron staff with both hands, adjusted his embroidered robes, leapt out of the camp gate, and shouted, "Who is the Great Sage Equal to Heaven?" The Great Sage brandished his Ruyi Staff and answered, "I am he. Who are you to dare question me?" Muzha replied, "I am Muzha, the second son of Heavenly King Li. I serve as a disciple and guardian of the faith under Guanyin Bodhisattva; my religious name is Huian." The Great Sage asked, "Why aren't you cultivating yourself in the South Sea? What brings you here to see me?" Muzha said, "My master sent me to scout the military situation. Seeing your rampant insolence, I have come specifically to capture you!" The Great Sage retorted, "You dare speak such big words! Don't run away—take this blow from Old Sun!" Muzha showed no fear; he raised his iron staff to meet the attack head-on. There, halfway up the mountain outside the camp gate, a fierce battle ensued: Though both wielded staves, the iron differed; though both fought, the warriors were distinct. One was a *Taiyi* immortal known as the Great Sage; the other, Guanyin's disciple, a true dragon among men. The solid iron staff was forged a thousand times through the divine arts of the Six Dings and Six Jias; the Ruyi Staff was the Stabilizer of the Heavenly River—a sea-calming treasure of immense magical power. They were true adversaries, their techniques and maneuvers endless. One unleashed a whirlwind of strikes, fierce and swift as a gale; the other parried and blocked with precision, leaving no opening. Banners fluttered in the wind; war drums thundered. Myriad heavenly generals formed a tight ring, while a host of demon monkeys crowded close. Strange mists and gloomy clouds blanketed the earth, while the smoke of war and baleful energy shot toward the heavenly palace. Yesterday's skirmish was intense, but today's clash was even fiercer. The Monkey King's true prowess was truly admirable; Muzha was defeated once more and barely escaped with his life. The Great Sage and Huian fought for fifty or sixty rounds; eventually, Huian’s arms grew numb and sore, leaving him unable to continue the battle. Feigning a strike to create an opening, he retreated in defeat. The Great Sage also withdrew his monkey troops and encamped them outside the cave entrance. Meanwhile, outside the Heavenly King’s camp, celestial soldiers of all ranks welcomed the Prince back; clearing a path, he proceeded straight to the main gate to report to the Four Heavenly Kings, Li the Pagoda-Bearer, and Nezha. Panting heavily and still catching his breath, he exclaimed in agitation, "What a Great Sage! Truly, his supernatural powers are immense! I was no match for him and have returned defeated." Li the Heavenly King was alarmed by this news; he immediately ordered a memorial for reinforcements to be drafted and dispatched the Mighty Ghost King and Prince Muzha to the Celestial Court to report the situation.
