You are invited to take part in a research study about perceptions of implicit biases, microaggressions, and structural racism and employment among African American & Hispanic/Latino Medical Social Workers. This form is part of a process called “informed consent” to allow you to understand this study before deciding whether to take part. This study seeks 10-15 volunteers who are: · Have worked as a medical social worker for at least one year · Are licensed (LMSW/ LCSW/ LISW) · African American and Hispanic/Latino · Read, and write in English · Be 18 years or older · Self-report having experienced implicit bias, microaggression, and/or structural racism. This study is being conducted by a researcher named Kristie Griffin who is a doctoral student at Walden University. Study Purpose The purpose of this study is to explore how African American and Hispanic/Latino social workers describe their experiences and perceptions with implicit biases, microaggressions, and structural racism in their employment and advancement in medical social work. Procedures After you consent, this study would involve you completing the following steps: · Initial Demographic Questionnaire – You will be asked to complete a brief questionnaire to collect general, non-identifying demographic information (e.g., age range, years of experience, job role). · Individual Interview – You will participate in a one-on-one interview lasting approximately 45–60 minutes, where you will be asked open-ended questions related to your perceptions of implicit biases, microaggressions, and structural racism and employment among African American & Hispanic/Latino Medical Social Workers · Optional Follow-Up – If needed, you may be contacted for a brief follow-up via email to clarify or expand on your responses. · Verification of Transcripts – You may be given the opportunity to review the transcript of your interview to ensure accuracy. · Here are the types of questions you will be asked: 1. Can you describe a specific instance where you experienced implicit bias, microaggressions, or structural racism in your role as a medical social worker? How did this situation unfold? 2. How did the experience of implicit bias or microaggressions affect your confidence or sense of belonging in the workplace as a medical social worker? 3. What emotions or thoughts came up for you during or after experiencing an incident of structural racism or microaggressions? 4. Can you share an example of how implicit biases or structural racism impacted your ability to advance in your career or take on leadership roles? Voluntary Nature of the Study Research should only be done with those who freely volunteer. So everyone involved will respect your decision to join or not. If you decide to join the study now, you can still change your mind later. You may stop at any time. The researcher will follow up with all volunteers to let them know whether or not they were selected for the study. Risks and Benefits of Being in the Study Being in this study could involve some risk of the minor discomforts that can be encountered in daily life such as sharing sensitive information. With the protections in place, this study would pose minimal risk to your wellbeing. If distress arises, support and referral can be obtained via dialing 988 for a national crisis hotline. Like most research, this study offers no direct benefits to individual volunteers. The aim of this study is to benefit society by empowering minority social workers especially African American and Latinos to voice their experiences and concerns. This empowerment may lead to a collective advocacy for equitable and inclusive workplace in society where recruitment and promotion is based on merit and not race, thus providing equal career opportunities for people in society community to thrive based on their skills Results of this study will be published online in Scholarworks and possibly other research sources that are easily found if you search for the researcher’s name along with the study topic. Payment This study is on a voluntary basis, thank you cards will be emailed to the participants. Privacy The researcher is required to protect your privacy. Data will be kept secure by password-protection. In this study, codes will be used instead of names to protect participants’ identities. Each participant will be assigned a unique code, and no names or directly identifying information will be included in the main dataset. This method helps ensure confidentiality and minimizes the risk of any individual being identified, even if the data were inadvertently accessed. Data will be kept for a period of at least 5 years, as required by the university. Protecting your name: Your identity will be kept confidential, within the limits of the law. The researcher will not include your name or anything else that could identify you in the study reports. The researcher is only allowed to share your name or contact info as needed with Walden University faculty (who are also required to protect your privacy) or with authorities if court-ordered (very rare). Protecting your responses and other information: The researcher is authorized to publicly share anonymized group patterns from the volunteers’ responses. The researcher will not use your recording or responses for any purposes outside of this research project. The researcher is only permitted to share your responses with other researchers and analysis tools if all names, places, voices, images, and other identifying details have been removed.
