The pack’s enforcer was the last man I could afford to trust. He was still watching me though. Craig looked even bigger than usual as he perched on the barstool next to me. Dressed in his usual black t-shirt and jeans, I wondered how someone could be content with a closet full of identical clothes. “Can I buy you a drink?” He glanced at the karaoke stage and grimaced as the singer attempted an unusually high note. “A glass of wine to ease your suffering.” Clearly, he didn’t know me very well. “A shot of tequila,” I directed the bartender. Craig raised an eyebrow but said, “Make that two.” The burn settled my nerves. But when the bartender held up the bottle, I shook my head no. While I appreciated a good shot of tequila, I wasn’t ready to let my guard down enough around Craig to risk two. Craig, however, downed two more shots before turning the conversation to business. “We need to talk.” He shifted his weight on the bar stool but didn’t turn to look at me, keeping his attention on the empty shot glasses in front of him. “Okay.” “Not here.” I knew better than to leave with him. While my gut may have still been telling me he wasn’t Jack’s killer, there were too many loose ends that pointed to his involvement. Even if he hadn’t killed the reporter, it was entirely possible that he had covered it up for his boss who had. “I’m good here.” He scanned the room, but no one was paying attention to us. “Did you talk to Jack before you came looking for me at Howl?” “Does it matter?” I already knew the answer. The when was irrelevant; all that mattered to Craig was that I had the ability to talk to ghosts. That’s what always mattered to people. His next words proved me right. “And this?” Craig scanned me from head to toe. “Is this how you hide what you are?” I kicked out a foot and admired my plaid Burberry ballerina flats I’d found for a steal at the thrift store. “How exactly does my choice of shoes hide who I am?” Just because I raised the dead didn’t mean I couldn’t look good while I did it. These shoes were fire. He looked down at me. “You don’t look like a necromancer.” “I’m sorry. We can’t all be walking billboards for the apocalypse. Sometimes you need a little pop of color.” I turned the tables, giving him the once over. “And what are you?” I leaned into him and whispered in his ear. “Werewolf? Or something else?” I was close enough that I felt his body tense. “We’re not talking about me.” “Yeah, well. I guess we have that in common.” I swiveled my stool to face the bar and waved to get the bartender’s attention. This was going to be a two-shots-of-tequila kind of night, after all. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ WHAT READERS SAY: "Urban fantasy at its finest" "Addictive" “Sassy characters, new friends with their own secrets and an adventure that keeps you hooked.” Binge the complete Kali James Series from bestselling author L.A.
