Ad text

It’s my first time reading Banana Yoshimoto, and I can truly say I’m incredibly happy about it. I’ve always admired the way Japanese authors tell their stories, but this book felt like a completely different level. The way she describes even the simplest moments carries such warmth — it makes you feel as if you’re right there, living that scene yourself. I actually read somewhere that even the English translation slightly reduces the emotional power of the original text. And yet, I still found it absolutely beautiful. The book consists of two stories that may seem separate at first, but are both shaped around a beloved's loss. In 𝘒𝘪𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘯, we meet Mikage and Yuichi, while in 𝘔𝘰𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘸, we follow Satsuki. The 𝘒𝘪𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘯 story especially touched me, as it begins with Mikage’s loss of her beloved grandmother — a quiet yet powerful start that beautifully captures loneliness, grief, and the need for connection. It resonated with me deeply, as I lost my own grandmother around the same age, and many of Mikage’s emotions felt achingly familiar. P.S. of course, both stories are accompanied by the most delightful presence of food — comforting, vivid, and deeply intertwined with healing 🍜🏵 . "But if a person hasn’t ever experienced true despair, she grows old never knowing how to evaluate where she is in life; never understanding what joy really is. I’m grateful for it.” Truly well worth a read! 💜 #kitchen #bananayoshimoto #whatiread #bookstagram
