"“Ten thousand dollars and an apartment. Take it and leave.” Mike tossed the card at me. “That's all I get for our anniversary?” I asked coldly. Emma clung to Mike's arm, feigning innocence.""Christine… I'm pregnant.” Mike lifted his chin.""I have to take responsibility.” I only smiled — I knew Mike was infertile. *** A week later, at the hospital's charity gala, chandeliers glittered and whispers filled the hall. Mike and Emma's laughter froze when I entered — arm in arm with Harold Baxter, the hospital's owner. “Please welcome our new Head of Surgery, Dr. Christine Baxter!” The crowd gasped. Emma paled.""She's… Baxter's daughter?” I stepped forward, handing Mike a red folder. “A wedding gift — though you might want to check if you're really the father first.” Mike opened it. It's his medical report — Severe infertility. Color drained from his face. Emma trembled. I laughed and turned to Professor Jonathan Stevens, smiled softly. “Jonathan, I've decided to accept your proposal.” Then I faced Emma, her voice sweet as venom. “So, Emma… I guess you'll have to call me Aunt now.”" Christine's POV The sweat is running from my face as I assist Professor Stevens with a long, tiring operation. It is a very delicate operation, and I want it to be a success. Professor Stevens is one of the best plastic surgeons in New York. However, like other plastic surgeons, he does not help people become perfect like Hollywood celebrities. He uses his skills to perform reconstructive operations on people who need it, as the little girl lying on the operating table. She had severe damage to her face and other parts of her body when she was in a fire, and he is operating on her to make her beautiful again. I have always admired this doctor, and he is the reason why I became a doctor myself. "Dr Waltz, can you take over from me?" He asks. I nod and take over from him. I know exactly what to do. I have learned from the best. Professor Stevens is the best that you can get. Although he's my father’s silent partner, he gives his free time to help these patients who cannot afford plastic surgery and who need it to live a normal life again. I take over and I work carefully, but fast because time is of the essence. Professor Stevens only trusts me to help him. I have been working with him for the last two years. "Great job! You do have magical hands, Dr Waltz," Professor Stevens says as we walk out of the operating theatre. Professor Stevens is not an easy man to please. I'm a little stunned that he complimented me. However, he does not look happy. I wondered what I did wrong this time. He is a perfectionist and does not tolerate any mistakes. "Thank you, Professor," I say. "I am happy to have you at this hospital, Doctor Waltz. Being a doctor is your passion, and you are giving yourself to people who need you. I don’t understand why you don’t want to join our hospital. You can earn so much more than you earn here. However, I know you love working with these patients. I am glad I can assist you. I do not mind giving my service for free. However, I think you are neglecting your husband. Where has your husband been the last few nights? Have you been home?" Professor Stevens asks. Professor Stevens is about ten years older than me. I look at him, and although he is still in his scrubs, he is a handsome man. Tall, dark, handsome with deep blue eyes. My husband does not know much about me. My father and he never met. Mike and I got married quickly and did not have a big wedding. Mike never showed interest in meeting my father. "He has been working late, and I understand that he is a surgeon. Professor Stevens, I do not want people to think my father is favouring me when I work at his hospital. I love working here, and yes, I can get better pay if I go to a more prestigious hospital, but these people need me," I say. I know I sound irritated, but I have been wondering why my husband has been working late every night for the last few weeks. "I think you are wasting your talent. You can help so many more people. I am your father's partner. We would love to have you there. Our hospital is better equipped, and if you become our department head, you can convince your father to open a program like this, where we help people who need these surgeries. I am sick and tired of people who want to become more beautiful, and I refuse to operate on them. They are already perfect, while these people need our help to have a normal life. You have to take better care of your husband as well. Let me tell you one thing: Emma is back in town. She is my niece, and I know exactly where she is at night. However, if you want to keep yourself blind, I am not going to help you. Just be on the lookout for your husband and his family. They are not worthy of your time. I don't believe they will ever accept you because they do not know who your father is. If you want to keep your husband, why don't you tell him the truth?" Professor Stevens says. Professor Stevens is wealthy and a billionaire. Mark thinks I am from an ordinary family. "Excuse me, I'm going to wash up. I need to go home," I say. I walk away. My heart is heavy inside of me. My in-laws have been blaming me for not having a child yet, but it is not my fault. They also blame me for working at this hospital and look down on me. They think I am not a good enough surgeon to work at a prestigious hospital. I do not want them to know who my family is before they can accept me for who I am. I want them to accept me as a doctor and a good surgeon. If Emma is back, I know that I am in trouble because she is my husband's ex-girlfriend. My family always compares me to her because Emma has been working overseas in one of the most prestigious hospitals there. But I know that she is not a good doctor because she does not show any emotions to her patients. The only reason she became a doctor is to make money. She never had the passion to become a doctor. However, Emma had two things I always wanted: the respect of my in-laws and my husband's heart. So that is why he was working so late every night. I do not know what I will do about it because there is nothing I can do about it. If he wants to be with her, I cannot stop him. I can only pray that he realises that he loves me more than he loves her. I have worked long and hard and begged my father for seven years to give my husband a chance. He is on the verge of becoming the head of the surgical department at my father's hospital. I arranged everything for him. However, he does not know who I am. I don't want him to know until later. I don't want him to think that I have arranged everything for him. I want him to feel like he has accomplished it all by himself. I just hope that he does not repay my kindness by sleeping with his ex-girlfriend behind my back. Christine's POV I drive home. I am tired of the long operation. I don't believe my husband will be home early. I hate staying in that house. His parents are staying next door, and I do not like them coming around whenever they feel like it. I bought this house with my salary. I also bought a house next door for my in-laws. I thought they would be nicer to me. But they didn’t. Mike and his parents spend all their money to try to climb the social ladder. They throw lavish parties for their friends, colleagues and superiors to gain favour. They want to impress the elite in town to become part of them and live high above their means. I get home, and I am surprised to see Mike's car standing in the driveway. I'm surprised that he is home so early today. I walk into the house, and Mike is waiting for me in the sitting room. Of course, his mother and father are there again. However, they are not alone. Next to Mike is the woman that I was thinking about. Emma is sitting next to Mike. I have a sinking feeling in my stomach as I look at everybody who looks at me when I walk in. "What is going on? Why is Emma in our house?" I ask. Mike and I have been relatively happy until recently, when he started to work late. He became distant from me. "That is no way to greet a guest, but I guess you and your type do not know the meaning of hospitality. Emma and Mike have something to tell you," Maureen, my mother-in-law, says. "Go ahead, just tell me whatever you want to tell me," I look at the bags standing next to Mike's chair. Are those my bags? Is Mike throwing me out of my own house? We have a prenup. He can not throw me out of my house! I bought this house and his parents’ house. "Christine, you know that we have been together for a long time. You never gave me a child. You know that Emma is my first love. Well, she's back in my life and she's pregnant with my baby. I want a divorce. I hope that you are not going to be stubborn. I don't love you anymore. I want to be with Emma," Mike says. Every word of his stabs like a knife into my heart. "She is pregnant with your baby. Well, I am happy for you. It is very ironic," I say. I know she cannot be pregnant with Mike's baby. We had tests done to see why we cannot get pregnant. However, Mike never saw the results because I didn't want him to see that he is the reason why we cannot have children. Mike is shooting blanks. I'm not going to tell him now. He can marry this woman and raise another man's child for the rest of his life. I am shocked. I am numb. I didn't want to believe that Mike was having an affair behind my back, but I knew he was deep down. I knew he was not coming home at night because he was with his first love. "What is ironic about that? We are going to have our first grandchild, and I cannot wait. I hope it is a boy. He will be just as handsome as Mike," Maureen says. "I am sure he will look just like Mike. Won't he, Emma?" I ask. Emma frowns as she looks at me. I can see that she looks guilty and cannot look me in the eye. She knows that it is not Mike's child, but she has to get a child for her illegitimate child. I have nothing against Emma. Although she is ruining my marriage, I always felt a little sorry for her because her parents died when she was young, and her uncle was the one who raised her. I don't want to be Emma, telling Professor Stevens that she is expecting an illegitimate child. "All your things are packed. I am also giving you a hundred thousand dollars. I am sure it is enough for you. You can also keep the apartment we have in town. Please, do not make a scene, Christine," Mike says. I do not know if I should laugh or cry. Although everything is shattered inside of me, I'm not going to show these people that they have hurt me. I will keep my head high, and I will walk out of here with nothing because I don't need their money. I'm not going to cry. I am stronger than that. My father has told me that you never show anybody when they hurt you. You do not want them to feel they have any power over you in case they want to get back into your life and use you again. "I am not going to make a scene, I know when I'm not wanted. However, I do not want your money, and you can keep the apartment. You forgot one thing! This is my house! I paid for it and the one next door! You are the ones who have to move. You and your parents," I say. "Come on, Christine, don’t keep yourself high and mighty. You and Mike are married, and he deserves to get this house! We will not move out! You might have paid for the houses, but Mike had to look after you all these years! Mike and Emma will need this house for their children to grow up in, and since you cannot have children, the apartment is enough for you! Mike is being generous. Don't make things difficult for him," John, my father-in-law, says. "I am not making anything difficult for him. I am making it easier for him. I will get my attorneys to start the divorce procedure. I will get this divorce over and done with as quickly as possible. I want my freedom back as quickly as possible. Mike never gave any of his money to me or the household. I paid for everything, even your food! Mike, if I were you, I would move out, or I will have all of you thrown out of my house! This one and the one next door belong to me. You all better start packing. I would also not count on that promotion you were hoping for. I will not count on becoming the head of the surgical department at Westview General," I say. I cannot help being a little bitter. I am not going to allow my father to give that position to Mike, and I will never give them the houses. "Bahahaha! As if you have a say in it! Emma was the one who convinced her uncle to give Mike the position. You have no say. We will not move! We will get a court order if we have to and throw you out of the house!" Maureen laughs. I know Jonathan Stevens has a lot of say in my father's business, but he's only my father's silent partner. He has no say about who is appointed and who is not. I was the one arranging everything for Mike. I was the one who begged my father for seven years to give Mike that position. I take my bags and walk to my room. I will not sign those divorce papers, and I will have my attorneys pull up new ones. I do not want to sign away my houses. “Where do you think you are going?” Maureen shouts. “To my room in my house!” I shout. However, Maureen and Mike grab me and throw me out of my house with my bags! Jonathan's POV My niece Emma has called me to come to Mike's house as they have exciting news. I love my niece, but I know that she is not a good woman. I have failed her. I was the one who was supposed to take care of her when my brother and sister died. Emma turned out to be a woman who would do anything she wanted. She is giving me grey hair. I know Doctor Mike. Everybody knows him and his family. They are all surgeons. They never let anybody in the medical community forget that they are all surgeons, the whole family, and I think my niece has decided that she wants to become the next Dr Waltz. I feel sorry for Christine Waltz. I tried to warn her about her husband. I am driving to Mike's house when I see Christine lying on the ground outside the house. "Professor Stevens, what are you doing here? I am sorry, I am a mess. You were right. Your niece did have an affair with my husband. Or shall I say soon-to-be ex-husband?” Christine says as she tries to get up from the ground. I bend over and pull her up. "Well, I'm sorry it had to happen to you, but on the other hand, I am glad that you are out of that toxic family. You do not belong here. You have a good heart, and you are a great surgeon, much better than any one of them. I hope you are reconsidering your ex-husband's position at your father's hospital. I hope you tell your father everything. I do not want him to be the head of our surgical department. He is not that great, and his skills are lacking. I am only your father's silent partner. I don't have a say in running the whole business because I do not want to be that involved. It will not give me the time to help people in need. Dry your tears. They are not worthy of your tears. Ah, we'll go and sort out my niece. I don't want her to be involved with that family. However, I cannot stop her from getting involved with that man because she is not young anymore, and I cannot tell her what to do. It is her life, but I know she's going to mess it up like you did. Why are you lying here outside? Did they kick you out?" I ask. “Yeah, but it is my house. I bought it. We have a prenup, because my in-laws were afraid I would drain Mike dry,” Christine says. “Well, this is not happening! Not on my watch! I don’t understand my niece. Why would she break up a marriage, and that for someone like Mike?” I say half to myself. "She is pregnant, but ... never mind, it is none of my business," Christine says. "What?" I ask. "Like I said, it's none of my business, and I don't have a say in their lives. It is for them to decide what they need to do and if they want to be honest with each other. Good luck with that family, as they are now going to become a part of your family. I just want them out of my house! I paid for those houses. Yes, I bought my in-laws a house," Christine says. I do not know how Mike can choose my niece over Christine. Christine is much more beautiful than my niece. Her red hair looks like fire under the rays of the late afternoon sun, and her green eyes sparkle like emeralds from the tears. She is a natural beauty with a little bit of speckles on her nose. What am I thinking? I cannot look at a woman who is ten years younger than me. Besides, I don't believe in love anymore. After my ex-wife ran away with my best friend, I don't believe in love anymore. I have learned the hard way that love only hurts. It is something that Christine will have to learn on her own. I cannot help her. I do feel sorry for her, but there is nothing I can say or do to make her feel better. The pain of betrayal is something you have to learn to live with. However, I can help her throw these people out of her house! "Just tell me what else I need to know?" I ask. Christine looks hesitant, as if she does not want to tell me something. Then she smiles through her tears and looks at me. "Emma told him that you were the one who arranged for Mike to become the head of the surgical department. Please keep it a secret for now. I will talk to you and my father about it. I have other plans," Christine says. "I hate it when Emma does that. She always uses my name to get what she wants. In this case, she uses my name to get your husband. My niece needs to be taught a lesson. Okay, let’s go inside. I will kick them out! If they do not want to move, I will call your father and his guards," I say. I do not like to see Christine this pathetic. She is much stronger, especially in the operating theatre. She can handle any crisis under any circumstances, and I don't like to see her this pathetic. She is a strong woman. I know she can take the leadership when performing a very important operation, and she can make it a success. She is one of the best in her field, and I hate to see her this pathetic over a man. She is strong. She is a woman that I admire, and there are not many women that I admire because I think most of them are sly and cunning. They will betray you whenever they can. Maybe I am just judgmental because one hurt me so badly that I am not over her. I don't know if I will ever be able to move forward after her betrayal. Perhaps Christine feels the same way about men as I do about women. We both have been betrayed. We both have been hurt. Christine's POV “Can we please not call my father. He is not well lately, and this may upset him. I do not want them to know who my father is. I do not want Mike and his family to go to my father’s house and upset him. Please, can we keep it a secret for now?” I ask. “Sure. Do not worry, I will handle all of this,” Professor Stevens says. I smile at him, thankfully. My hands and knees are hurting from the fall on the veranda. The door is not locked, and Professor Stevens and I walk in without even knocking. Why should I knock on my door? It is my house after all! My in-laws, Mike and Emma, are celebrating. My in-laws and Mike are drinking champagne while Emma has a glass of juice in her hand. They all look up as Professor Steven and I walk in. “Christine! Don’t you have any shame! Why are you here? We threw you out!” Maureen shouts. “You are the ones who should leave. You have five minutes to leave Doctor Waltz’s house. If not, I will call security and even the police to throw you out. Also, you'd better get on eаrth out of the house next door as well. It all belongs to Doctor Waltz. As for you, Emma, you are going home with me! We need to talk! Your new boyfriend and his family are not welcome in my house,” Professor Steven says. “How dare you tell Professor Stevens lies! This is our property!” Maureen says. “Can you prove it? Where is your deed? Who paid for these houses?” Professor Stevens asks. I can only look at him in admiration. He is such a strong man. “The divorce is not finalised, and we are planning on fighting her in court for these houses. It is the least she can do after Mike put up with her for years! She could not even give him a child! She is useless and works for much less money than Mike! Besides, what does she want to do with a house? Professor Stevens, Mike and Emma are in love they are expecting a baby. Our grandchild deserves to grow up in a house like this. She is your niece. Surely you will not throw her and Mike out of this house because of a scumbag like Christine. She is not worthy of Emma’s old shoes,” John says. “What makes you think that? Do you even know anything about Dr Christine?” Jonathan asks. I cannot think about him as Professor Stevens anymore. He is my friend now, and he is standing up for me against these bullies. These people treated me very badly over the years. I never wanted to tell my father. He is getting older, and I do not want to upset him. “She is a leech! She has been leeching off our name! She is working at that backyard hospital because she cannot get a job at a prestigious hospital like Emma, Mike and us. She only got a job because of us! Her family is nothing! Emma is pregnant with Mike’s child. Please, do not upset her,” Maureen says. “Being pregnant is no excuse for taking someone else’s husband and property. The time is ticking. You'd better get moving and take your clothes. You cannot take anything else from the houses. I am sure Doctor Christine paid for everything,” Jonathan says. “Everything belongs to us! You won’t even be a doctor if it were not for us. You would have stayed on the streets. She is using our name! We are well-known surgeons in this town, and we rub elbows with everyone! I will not allow her to destroy our reputation,” John shouts. “You pathetic excuse of a human being! I do not love you anymore! Why can't you accept it and leave Emma and me alone! Professor Stevens, please, do not let her tell you lies. I have contributed to this house as much as she did, and it is our house, not just hers! I am willing to give her an apartment in town in exchange for her share of these properties,” Mike says. “And you think an apartment is worth the price of both houses? Mike, I do not care if you have a hundred other women. I only want what is rightfully mine. I will not give you and your parents my property. Please, leave. You can all move into the apartment. I am sure it is big enough for all of you,” I say. “How dare you? We have been good to you for years! You are the one who could not conceive. You can’t blame Mike for wanting Emma back. He and Emma were always in love. They broke up after school because Emma moved away, but their hearts always belonged to each other,” Maureen says. “I do not care! Get out of my house!” I shout. “You do not know anything about Christine. It is a shame you never got to know your wife, Doctor Mike. Now, Emma, go get in my car or I will through you out with the rest of them,” Jonathan says. Emma pretends to stumble and grabs Mike’s hand. “Mike, baby, I am so sorry. It is all my fault. You will be kicked out of this house, and your parents will not have a place to stay. I am feeling so bad. My head is spinning,” Emma says dramatically. “Christine! See what you have done! Emma is upset. Professor Steven, your poor niece is not feeling well, and that's all because of that her!” Mike shouts as he holds Christine in his arms. “Emma, stop your acting. We are all doctors here, and I can see you are not feeling sick or guilty. Go get in my car right now! The rest of you, pack your bags and leave!” Jonathan says. “We will not! It is our houses!” Maureen shouts. “Why are you taking this bumpkin’s side, Professor. Don’t you want the best for your niece?” John asks. “Not at the expense of the rightful owner. Your time is up,” Jonathan says as he picks up his phone and calls someone. Mike, Emma, John and Maureen look at us. “You are kidding. The authorities will not throw us out of our own houses,” Maureen says. Jonathan smiles. “Who said I called the authorities?” He asks. Jonathan’s POV “What do you mean by that? Uncle Jonathan, did you call your guards?” Emma asks. She knows I own a lot of guards. I am wealthy, and most of the people in town who are as wealthy as I have guards and people to protect them, their family and their property. “I told you to get in my car!” I say. “But Uncle Jonathan, I love Mike. I want to be with him for the rest of my life. He is the father of my baby. Please, do not kick us out of the house because of her. Mike and I could not help falling in love,” Emma says. “Ugh!” Christine makes a sound as if she knows something I do not know. “What do you know that I do not know?” I ask Christine. “Nothing. It is not my place to talk,” Christine says. “Yes! You are just jealous of the relationship Mike and I have. You are jealous because he picked me over you!” Emma says, but she sounds panicked as if she does not want Christine to talk. What is going on? I do not understand. Does Christine think Emma is lying about the father of her child? I know my niece is not the best human on earth, but I do not believe she will lie about who the father of her baby is. She has been spending a lot of time with Mike lately, or at least I suspected it. “Enough! I do not want to know about your love lives. I do not care! Emma, get into my car now! I do not want you to get hurt when they get removed from the houses. I told you to get your clothes, but since you did not want to listen, you will be removed without anything. Also, do not think you can come back to the houses. Christine, I think you should call your guards to come over and protect these properties. We will see after the divorce what the court decides,” Jonathan says. “Bahahaha, Christine and her family cannot afford guards,” John laughs. “Yes, no one will kick us out! This is our son’s home, and the house next door is ours,” Maureen says. “Yes, I am not going to leave. I am staying with Mike. You cannot tell me what to do, Uncle. I am over twenty-one, and you have no say over me anymore,” Emma says. “Well, then, you will end up on the streets with these people. Who does the apartment belong to?” I ask Christine. “To Mike’s parents. It is the only thing they bought for themselves. You can all laugh now, but I promise you, you will not be laughing for long,” Christine says. She takes out her phone and walks away. I know she is calling her father’s security. They will arrive after my men get here. They will protect her against these people once my men and I go home. “Bahahaha, she is calling her guards! Christine must think we will fall for her tricks,” John laughs again. “You are so clueless. Didn’t all of you go to school together? How can you not know who the woman you are married to is, Mike? You are her in-laws, and you know nothing about her? Am I the only one who knows anything about Christine?” I ask. “What do you know what we don’t know? She is a nobody and a mediocre doctor. She cannot even land a job in a prestigious hospital. Her parents must be from a small town because we never met them. I am not interested in mingling with people below our status! You should not mingle with her, Professor Stevens. You are why above her,” Maureen says. I know these people. I have worked with them for a long time. All of them are mediocre doctors. Christine is the only talented one in the Waltz family. She has magical hands when it comes to surgery. “You may all laugh now, but later you will regret your words. Besides, I have worked with Christine. She is the only one worthy of being called a doctor in this family. She may work for less money than you, but she knows how to work with her money, unlike you. Have you ever wondered how a doctor who works for less than you can afford to buy two properties?” I laugh. I am not going to tell them who Christine is. “Maybe she has wealthy lovers? You are not one of her lovers, are you, Professor Stevens?” Maureen asks. I am furious. How dare they! Christine is well respected in town, and many doctors who are passionate about their jobs know who she is and want to work with her. I hope she considers taking her place at the hospital where these people are working. She will have to do it someday. She is the only heir to her father’s fortune, and she will inherit all that is his. She will have to get used to working in our hospital. My men arrive. “Throw these people out! Make sure they do not come back. There will be other guards arriving soon. Also, don’t let them enter the property next door,” I say. “Don’t you dare touch us! I will call the police. This is our property!” Maureen shouts. My men do not care about Maureen. They only obey me. They grab everyone, Emma included, and start taking them outside. “Uncle, wait! I will go with you for now. I will wait until everything is sorted out in court,” Emma says. I hope Emma did not get into a relationship with Mike because she thinks he has money. Mike and his family do not stand a chance in court against Christine Braxton. She is one of the wealthiest heirs in this city. I hope she takes her maiden name back after the divorce. “Professor Stevens, you are going to regret taking her side,” Mike screams as my men lead him out of the house. I only smile. “Mike Waltz, you made the biggest mistake of your life when you decided to cheat on your wife with my niece. You are the one going to regret all you did to Christine,” I say. Christine's POV Tonight is the night of the hospital ball. I am already ready, and I will be attending the ball with my father and Professor Stevens. Tonight, we are also going to tell everyone who the new head of the department is going to be. I have not changed my surname yet. I am waiting for the divorce to be finalised before I take my maiden name back. It has been a week since Jonathan helped me throw my ex and his parents out of the house. I know that they have not done anything yet because everybody is waiting for the announcement. I think their son is going to get a huge amount of money every month. However, my father already knows everything. I am wearing a beautiful golden gown. It has a slit showing off my leg. My father and Jonathan are waiting for me as I make my way downstairs. I greet Jonathan, and he greets me back. "You look beautiful, my darling. I am glad you moved in here with me. I would have been worried about you if I knew that you were still staying on your own. I do not want you to stay there until everything is settled, and we could have taken care of Mike and his family. I cannot wait to see their faces tonight when they realise that Mike is not going to get that post and that you are going to the job. I cannot wait to announce the new head of the surgical department. I cannot wait to see their faces when they realise that they are deceived." My father laughs. We walked outside to the waiting limousine. Jonathan had not said a word yet. I know he doesn't like women. Everybody around him knows that he hates women after what his wife did to him. He is a handsome man, and he looks so handsome in his black suit. I am also glad I first moved into my father's house. But my house is still under guard, and nobody can interfere. I will not allow them to take anything, not even the clothes I have bought. Most of those things I would rather give the clothes and stuff I do not want to a charity organisation than give them back to them. It does not take us long to reach the hospital. There is a red carpet in front of the venue. Everybody important in the medical field will attend the annual hospital of West View Hospital. Everybody wants to work at West View. It is the most prestigious hospital in town, and it pays the most. It makes me sad that many doctors are only doctors to make money, and they don't care about the people who need them the most, those who cannot afford to get medical care. However, I do have hope in my heart for the future, as there are a lot of doctors who do charity work. There are organisations like Doctors Without Borders. They will work for free. As we step out of the limo, everyone looks at us. I get out first. I know that my ex and his family will be here. I am followed by Jonathan and my father. The first people I see are my ex, Emma, and his family. Of course, there are, rubbing elbows with the wealthy and the famous. There are even actresses and actors attending. West View's annual ball is to collect money for charity. This year's charity money will go to Sacred Heart Hospital. My father has already donated money for them to buy new equipment. It made Jonathan very happy. He likes to work there and help people in need. Of course, I have also helped him there because we do it for free. "What is she doing here? She's not even a good doctor," I hear Mareen say loud enough for everyone to hear. "Maybe she is kicking Mike out. Perhaps she wants him back. Can you believe how pathetic she is? Showing up here with my uncle. I hope she isn't running after my uncle because my uncle is a woman-hater and everyone knows it. Especially after what he is to him," Emma says. "Oh, look, there is Dr Harold Baxter. He is the owner of West View. I know your uncle is his partner, but we have known him ever since we studied together. It is a shame his wife died. I always liked her. I hear he has a daughter. I wonder if she is married. Maybe Mike will send a chance with her if she is still single," Maureen says. "Mother, I am with Emma, and she is pregnant with my baby. Christine, why are you here? Are you running after me? I don't want you anymore. You're just making a fool of yourself. Tonight is my big night, and now you're here to spoil it," Mike says. His friends and every snob around him start laughing. They are all staring at me. "Christine, honey, let's go inside," My father says. I know he does not like to make a scene in public. "Dr Baxter, I did not expect you to take a younger woman as a lover. I have known your dear wife, and I'm sure she would turn in her grave if she knew that you have this gold digger as your new lover. I don't know what she told you, but don't fall for her lies. She was married to my son, but he is in the process of divorcing her. Those houses that she claims are hers don't for it. They belong to my son and us. She just had help kicking us out. She thinks she can get the houses because of the divorce. She is not wealthy. She is just a poor doctor because she cannot get a job at a prestigious hospital like ours. She's using you to make Mike jealous," Maureen says. Everybody around Maureen is looking at me as if I have the plague. They are all pointing fingers at me. As if I were a harlot. "Watch your mouth, Maureen. She's not some woman you can just insult at will!" My father says.
