A Cozy Fantasy. The bell above the door chimed once—out of habit more than necessity—as Gwenda Merriford shuffled into her shop, a basket of fresh herbs tucked under one arm and a mild grumble aimed at the drizzle freckling her spectacles. Mimsy, already installed on the counter like a feline paperweight, offered a blink of approval before returning to her nap. “Good morning to you too,” Gwenda said, wiping her glasses on her shawl, which only succeeded in smearing the droplets into artistic swirls. She set down her basket and addressed the row of tea tins on the shelf behind the counter. “And good morning to you all. I trust you’ve behaved yourselves overnight?” The tins didn’t answer, though the sleepy camomile might have sighed. Gwenda nodded as if they had spoken and hung her damp cloak on the peg by the door, where it dripped dolefully onto the worn floorboards. The shop—officially named “Merriford’s Remedies and Curious Solutions,” though the villagers of Little Bramble simply called it “Gwenda’s”—was a narrow, cluttered affair that smelled perpetually of dried herbs, spiced honey, and the faint tang of magic. Shelves lined the walls from floor to ceiling, crammed with jars of every size and description. Some contained ordinary things: dried lavender, rosehips, chamomile flowers. Others held items of a more unusual nature: moonlight collected during the harvest full moon, bottled echoes from the caves beyond the Whispering Woods, and a small jar of what appeared to be ordinary buttons but were actually solidified memories of first dances. The shop had occupied the same corner of Little Bramble High Street for the past thirty-seven years, ever since Gwenda had inherited it from her Aunt Tillie. The sign outside swung slightly in the morning breeze, its gold lettering faded but still legible. Below the name, in smaller letters, was written: “For ailments of body, spirit, and the occasional garden gnome.” Gwenda approached the ancient copper kettle that sat atop a small iron stove in the corner. The kettle was a temperamental thing, prone to whistling off-key when startled or refusing to boil at all if addressed too sternly before its morning tea. “Now then,” she said gently, running a wrinkled hand over its burnished surface. “Let’s have some hot water for tea, shall we? Nothing too taxing, just a nice gentle boil.” The kettle quivered slightly, as if considering the request. Gwenda reached for her wand—a knobbly affair made from apple wood with a core of unicorn hair that had seen her through six decades of spellwork. With a delicate flick, she conjured a small blue flame beneath the kettle. Not too hot, not too fast—just right. “There we are,” she murmured. “Take your time.” The kettle seemed to relax, settling into a contented simmer rather than its usual indignant hiss. Gwenda nodded with satisfaction. Small magics, done properly, were often more effective than grand gestures. Continue reading in Kindle Unlimited. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0G24SVBXW
