@regis_mathieu 's genius has been to understand that the language of a chandelier lies in its materials. In his contemporary creations he draws on the full range of our artisans' hands — the chiselling, the gilding, the intricate work of the bronze — set, as in the eighteenth century, against beautiful rock crystal. These are chandeliers of the Mathieu house that carry the material story forward: pieces that will, in their turn, become the antiques of the future. There is something humbling in this. We restore chandeliers of two, three, four hundred years, and we read each one closely. And we know that what we create today will one day rest in the hands of another — restored, centuries from now, by someone we will never meet.
