🐾 Simba's Life-Saving Emergency at Revive Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital 🐾 Meet Simba, a 2.6-year-old Goldendoodle who came to Revive during the early morning hours after his family noticed sudden abdominal pain and severe abdominal swelling. Instead of waiting, they brought him in immediately—and that decision likely saved his life. Simba was diagnosed with Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus (GDV), commonly called bloat. This is one of the most life-threatening emergencies in dogs. The stomach fills with gas and twists, cutting off blood flow to the stomach and other vital organs. Without emergency surgery, GDV can rapidly become fatal. Dr. Deepan Kishore, MS, ABVP (Canine/Feline), ER Founding Fellow, performed emergency surgery to untwist Simba's stomach and perform a gastropexy, permanently attaching the stomach to the body wall to greatly reduce the risk of future torsion. After surgery, Simba received around-the-clock ICU care from Dr. Lisa Piña, Dr. Halie Fetters, Dr. Novikoff, Dr. Gabe, and our outstanding ICU team. ❤️ We are happy to share that Simba recovered beautifully and is now doing great! While many dogs survive GDV with prompt treatment, not every patient is as fortunate. Delayed treatment can result in irreversible damage to the stomach and other organs. Recognizing the signs and seeking immediate veterinary care can truly save your pet's life. Dogs at higher risk include: • Great Danes • Labrador Retrievers • Golden Retrievers • Goldendoodles and other Doodles • Bernese Mountain Dogs • German Shepherds • Standard Poodles • Other large, deep-chested breeds Can GDV be prevented? Yes! Many high-risk dogs benefit from a prophylactic gastropexy, a preventative procedure that significantly reduces the risk of stomach torsion. Our surgeons also perform preventative airway (BOAS) surgery for French Bulldogs, English Bulldogs, Pugs, and Boston Terriers to help them breathe easier. At Revive, we perform emergency and specialty surgeries including: ✔ GDV (Bloat) Surgery ✔ Exploratory Surgery ✔ Foreign Body Removal ✔ Endoscopy ✔ Pyometra Surgery ✔ C-Sections ✔ TPLO & CBLO (ACL Repair) ✔ Fracture Repair ✔ Soft Tissue & Minimally Invasive Surgery 🚑 Revive Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital is OPEN 24/7 for emergencies, including nights, weekends, and holidays. 📍150 S.
