PNG's Superannuation Industry is Projected to Reach K100 BILLION in Net Assets by 2050 Papua New Guinea's superannuation industry has experienced remarkable long-term growth. From K814 million in net assets in 2000, the industry has expanded to K23.98 billion by 2025, representing a 25-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14.49%. This exceptional performance reflects the industry's early years, when growth was driven from a relatively small asset base with significant untapped potential. Over the past decade, however, growth has matured, with the industry's 2016–2025 CAGR moderating to 8.57%. This is a natural progression as the asset base has become substantially larger. Looking ahead to 2050, projections based on different growth scenarios indicate that total industry net assets could reach: • 9% CAGR: K206.8 billion • 8% CAGR: K164 billion • 7% CAGR: K130 billion • 6% CAGR: K103 billion Charlie Gilichibi, CEO for Comrade Trustee Services Limited (CTSL) said: “This growth will continue to be driven by two key factors: investment returns and net contributions from members and employers.” He further stated “While sustaining a 9% growth rate over the next 25 years may become increasingly challenging in a relatively small domestic economy, the anticipated wave of major resource developments between 2027 and 2040 could provide sufficient economic momentum to support stronger long-term growth.” Even under the conservative assumption of a 6% CAGR, Papua New Guinea's superannuation industry is expected to exceed K100 billion in net assets by 2050. Should economic growth accelerate as anticipated, the industry could realistically grow to between K100 billion and K200 billion over the same period. A capital pool of this magnitude, together with the growing investment capacity of institutions such as MRDC and other domestic fund managers, will fundamentally reshape Papua New Guinea's investment landscape. The challenge will no longer be raising capital, but identifying productive investment opportunities capable of absorbing it. This underscores the need for forward-looking national policy and regulatory frameworks that facilitate the sound growth, preservation and efficient allocation of long-term domestic capital into infrastructure, housing, agriculture, energy, private enterprise and other productive sectors. Capital managers should play an active role in informing, advocating for, and helping shape these policy settings to ensure Papua New Guinea is well positioned to deploy this growing pool of national savings over the next quarter century.
