Ad text
Around the world, the Church is exploding in places where believers meet in homes, courtyards, and secret gatherings. In China, the number of Christians has grown from around 1 million in 1949 to an estimated 80–100 million today — largely through underground house church networks, not big campuses. (Premier Christianity) In nations like Iran and across parts of Asia, some of the fastest-growing expressions of Christianity are simple, decentralized communities multiplying under pressure, often outside any formal institution. (International Christian Concern, Global Christian Relief) Meanwhile, in North America, the institutional church is shrinking. U.S. church membership has dropped from about 70% in 1999 to below 50% today, and regular attendance has fallen from 42% to 30% in just two decades. (Gallup) And even among those who still attend, only about 4% of American adults hold a genuinely biblical worldview that shapes how they live. (Arizona Christian University) We don’t have perfect statistics yet comparing biblical worldview inside global house church movements with the U.S. institutional church, but the contrast in fruit is hard to ignore: where gatherings are simple, costly, and disciple-making, the Church grows deeper and wider. Where church is mostly a weekly event, belief and practice drift. So no—the Church isn’t dying. Jesus is still building His Church. But He may be shaking the model we’ve normalized. 🔗 Want to dig deeper into this contrast and what a decentralized, biblical ecclesiology could look like in the West?
