Your habits are more contagious than you think. Research on social contagion shows that our health behaviours can influence the people around us—even people we may never meet. When a friend became obese, the chances of becoming obese increased by approximately 67%. If a sibling became obese, the increase was around 40%, and if a spouse became obese, around 37%. The same ripple effect can work in a positive direction too. When one spouse quits smoking, the other spouse’s chance of smoking decreases significantly. And it doesn’t stop with the people closest to you. The extended social contagion theory suggests that health behaviours can spread across three degrees of separation—from you, to your friends, to their friends, and then to their friends. What’s fascinating is that social distance can matter more than geographic distance. Someone living miles away can still influence your health through your social network. So every healthy habit you adopt has the potential to create a ripple effect far beyond your immediate circle. Change yourself, and you may be changing the health of people you haven’t even met yet.
