My Great Dane barked determinedly at my boots and I groaned. ‘Quit it,’ I said to Gato, throwing a pillow roughly in his direction. My head hurt. Too much wine. He didn’t quit it. I pushed myself up and glared at my insolent hell hound. He ignored my death gaze and kept on barking at my favourite pair of ankle boots. I heaved myself up and flounced over to them. Then I let out a horribly girly scream and leapt back onto the bed. ‘What the hell?’ I shouted at Gato. ‘Why is there a mutant spider in my shoes?’ He gave me a look that could only be termed smug. ‘All right, all right, you were right to tell me about the demon spider,’ I conceded. I looked around my bedroom for a likely looking spider container. Not a damn thing. ‘I’ll go to the kitchen and grab some Tupperware. You keep the spider pinned down there.’ Gato gave a woof of acknowledgement and focused all his attention on our eight-legged friend. I grabbed my phone and took a couple shots of the big guy. Always documenting; it’s a private eye’s habit. Evidence secured, I ran downstairs and searched through the kitchen cupboards. I had a tinfoil take-away box with a cardboard lid for if I wanted to batch cook and freeze some dinners. Not that I was much of a chef, but my occasional room-mate was. I stabbed the cardboard lid a few times to give the little critter some airholes, big enough to breathe through but not big enough to crawl out of, then raced back upstairs. As I ran, I gathered up my magic, growing my intention. I burst into the room and focused it on the spider. ‘Up!’ I ordered. The spider leapt out of my black suede boot and into the air. ‘In!’ I held out the container. The spider flew into it, and I squealed a little as I secured the lid. With shaking hands, I placed the box on my dresser and let out an explosive breath. ‘Damn – that was massive.’ Gato ducked his head in agreement. The spider was nearly the size of the palm of my hand. Its legs were thick and hairy, and it was a muddy-brown colour, save for a splash of red across its terrifyingly large jaws. It had a lot of beady eyes, two of which were bigger than the others. I swear it had glared at me as it flew through the air. Catching the beast had cleared the hangover right out of my system, so that was a plus side to a horrific experience. I spent the next five minutes Googling spiders and scrolling through images of terrifying arachnids. Spiders just aren’t my thing. I was glad no one but Gato had been around to witness my screams because my street cred would have gone down the toilet. Not that I had much to start with, but I’m pretty sure I got some from my association with the very sexy Emory, King of Dragons. 𝐄-𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤/𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B097Z1Y2ZP?
