Maria here. Founder of The Nokbox. Every now and then I like to reflect on how we got here. I never thought I’d start a company like this. A few years ago, I was just a teacher, a real estate agent, and a mom, living my everyday life here in Colorado. And then everything changed. In 2021, my dad passed away. My brothers and I traveled to his home in upstate New York, and overnight, we were thrown into something we were completely unprepared for. Of course, we were grieving, but at the same time, we were suddenly responsible for everything. Notifying loved ones. Planning a funeral. Writing an obituary. And then… figuring out his entire life. We quickly realized that even though he had a will, it was only a small piece of the puzzle. The rest? It felt like a scavenger hunt. We spent days digging through drawers, file cabinets, boxes, closets, trying to piece together accounts, paperwork, passwords, keys, and anything that could help us make sense of it all. We sat around my brother’s kitchen table for hours, guessing passwords and trying to track down bank accounts and investments. At one point, we were literally chasing down physical items across multiple states, asking strangers about a camper, a boat, even a golf cart, with no clear answers and no keys. And all I could think was… There has to be a better way than this. So we did the only thing we could think of in that moment… we created our own system. We went to a local office store and bought a simple box. We started organizing everything we found—documents, keys, notes—into one place. We made checklists of what we needed to find, and then checklists of what we needed to do. And slowly, piece by piece, things became more manageable. That box—the one we built out of necessity, in the middle of grief—became the very first Nokbox. What started as a way to help my own family turned into something so much bigger. Because I realized we weren’t alone. So many families go through this same painful, overwhelming process… at the exact moment they’re least equipped to handle it. Losing someone you love is already hard enough. You shouldn’t also have to go on a scavenger hunt to figure out their life. That’s why I created the Nokbox. It’s not just a box. It’s a system. A way to organize your life so that the people you love aren’t left with confusion, stress, and unanswered questions. It’s a way to bring peace of mind, not just someday, but right now. Because at the end of the day, this isn’t about paperwork. It’s about taking care of the people you love… even when you’re not here to do it yourself. If sharing this story helps even one family avoid what we went through, it’s worth it. And if you’ve ever had to go through something like this, please know you’re not alone!
