Being a parent is wild because no matter how tired you are... too bad. Look, we know sleep is important for your physical and emotional health and wellbeing. BUT, it’s not always easy to get enough of it when you’re a parent, guardian or carer. Sleep is an individual thing—what works for one person might not work for others. Parenthood, shift work or health conditions can all impact your sleep. Find out what works for you and keep at it. If you can, try these healthy sleep habits: > Make sure your room is dark, quiet, and cool. > Avoid large meals, caffeine and alcohol close to sleep time. > Exercise regularly, but not in the evening. > Reduce your exposure to blue light before sleeping—avoid screens at least one hour before going to bed. > Do something you find relaxing before bed. Remember, being a parent doesn’t mean you stop being a person. Making time for yourself can help if you’re struggling, and it doesn’t mean making massive changes. Self-care as a parent can look like going for walk with the kids to get some time in nature, reaching out to friends and family you trust for support or making time to do something you enjoy (even if it’s just for 10 minutes). It’s normal to feel sad, tired or stressed sometimes, especially when juggling a busy life as a parent or carer. But if you’re struggling with your mental wellbeing, speak to a family member or trusted family friend, seek professional help from your GP or contact @pandanational, @lifelineaustralia and @beyondblueofficial. ℹ️ Sources: Healthline, Healthdirect, Triple P Parenting, Qld Health.
