The big Muslim feast of Eid (called Tabaski in Senegal) is May 27, when each family kills a ram to remember Abraham's obedience. "The Messiah is the promised Savior. He never sinned. That's why only he could shed his blood and pay the punishment for sin which everyone deserves," I said. One day we read Genesis 16, about Hagar, mother of Ishmael, whom many Muslims believe is the ancestor of Mohammed. I said, "What did Hagar name God? What gave her the courage to return to slavery under Sarah's heavy hand? She realized that God had taken notice of her. You are a widow with three sons. Do you realize that God knows how hard you have to work, and that he loves you? He meets your biggest need, that of forgiveness and eternal life. He sent the Messiah to take the punishment for yours and my offenses against him” The Wolofs have a saying, “Women get to heaven on their husband’s praises.” They fear divorce and feel degraded under polygamy. Women aren’t permitted in the mosque until they reach old age. What a joy to present Senegalese women the Gospel. What joy when one sees eyes light up, when they learn that God wants to have a relationship with them, and that friendship is made possible through the Messiah!
