Tucked away down a cosy Claremont laneway with all the commercial visibility of a Cold War defector, we pride ourselves on being hard to find — a little piece of literary treasure worth the effort of discovery. Occasionally, however, obscurity has its drawbacks. And then came The Global Bookshop Crawl. Sixteen independent bookshops. One map. Readers travelling from Joondalup, Midland, Maylands and — at last — Success. A procession of literary pilgrims bearing excellent tote bags from every side of the train tracks. For one glorious week, Perth behaved as though independent bookshops were essential civic infrastructure. A dangerous idea.
