Time flies and before you know it, your child has almost finished high school. The problem is that many students with good grades in writing go off to university and suffer grade shock due to tougher marking standards. Grade inflation is so bad that 60% of Ontario high school students graduate with an "A" average (80% or higher), but only 23% of university professors think students “are able to write at a university level” (source: Cote and Allahar). What happens to these "A" grades when students go to university? According to research, nearly 50% of students drop an entire letter grade and nearly 25% drop TWO letter grades or more (source: Martinello & Finnie). This leaves students demoralized and at risk of dropping out of the programs of their dreams. The problem doesn’t start in high school. The problem starts much earlier in elementary school, where students don’t learn the fundamentals of writing. According to US government data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), which is a standardized national test, only 28% of grade 4 students are proficient writers ("proficient" means at a "B" or "A" level), and this DROPS to 27% of grade 12 students (results are similar in Canada). It’s hard to believe, but FEWER students are proficient in writing after 8 years of school. Even fewer students are excellent writers. Only 3% of students are considered “advanced,” and that’s largely due to parents and tutoring, not anything that happens in the classroom. The problem isn't the kids. Among middle school teachers, for example, 64% report that they received either minimal or no training in teacher’s college in how to teach writing (source: Graham et al). Students are even less likely to find help from their high school teachers: 71% of secondary teachers report that they received either minimal or no training in how to teach writing during their time in teacher’s college. This was my experience in teacher’s college at OISE (Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at University of Toronto). No professor in teacher's college knew how to teach writing, and they admitted as much. What’s worse is that they fully understood the seriousness of the problem but had no interest in fixing it. One of my professors said that teaching kids how to write properly should take precedence over subject matter instruction, but he then admitted that he wouldn't know how to help a student with writing. This professor was a retired Toronto high school Politics and History teacher. During his decades-long career, he assigned countless writing tasks that his students struggled with, but he couldn't be bothered to learn the rules of grammar in order to help his students write properly! In my experience, most educators are like this. By grade 5, every student has been taught the hopelessly vague "hamburger essay" model, and that's the end of writing instruction as far as most teachers are concerned. It’s rare to meet a student who has received grammar instruction. To cover up for the lack of instruction, students are assigned basic writing tasks even in higher grades, grammar isn’t assessed or corrected, and marks are inflated to keep students and parents quiet. As a result, students are ill-equipped for the high expectations of university, which turns into a bewildering sink-or-swim experience. It doesn't have to be like this. You can give your child the advanced writing skills they need to succeed LONG BEFORE they run into problems at university. In fact, most children in grades 5-8 have little trouble mastering the rules of writing. School then becomes easy and fun, and these students get a huge boost in self-esteem! The AEM Academic Writing Program is designed to address the lack of formal writing instruction in a typical classroom and train your child to write well. As a result, your child will gain a massive LIFELONG advantage in communication skills compared to peers. The program focuses on: 1) Detailed paragraph, report, and essay frameworks, which tell students exactly how to structure and develop ideas without any guesswork 2) Workflows that simplify complex writing tasks by breaking them down into manageable smaller tasks 3) Grammar foundations training, which eliminates mistakes like run-ons, fragments, and subject-verb agreement errors 4) The complex sentence system, which gives students a large repertoire of sentence structures to flexibly express their ideas It isn’t just the lack of instruction that’s the problem. It’s also the lack of practice, detailed feedback, and opportunities for revisions. Learning to write is very much like learning a sport: it doesn’t matter how many Tiger Woods videos you watch - you won’t get better at golf until you go out and hit the ball thousands of times. You also need someone to watch what you’re doing, provide feedback and guidance, and then make sure that you’re able to implement the guidance. Without ALL four of these elements (explicit instruction, regular practice, detailed feedback, and revisions with follow-up feedback), students are not getting enough practice and guidance to make a difference, and the teacher has no way of knowing whether students are actually learning and improving. In contrast, the AEM Academic Writing Masterclass is like elite athletic coaching. This program gives students more writing practice with detailed feedback and revision opportunities than any other program on earth. Without this extensive writing practice, it's IMPOSSIBLE to learn how to write well. Your child CAN master academic writing, but it does take some time. Don't put it off any longer, hoping that your child's next teacher will make a difference. I asked a student in my program how much writing she's been doing in school. It was the last day of September, and she hadn't done a single writing assignment. Not one. Another student said her final grade 8 English assignment was to write a one-paragraph story about a snowman. One student happily reported that he writes a paragraph every day. When I asked what kind of feedback he receives, the answer was “a completion checkmark.” How is he supposed to get better? Practice doesn’t make perfect - it makes errors permanent if you’re making the same mistakes repeatedly. This is why so few students can write well. The reality is that, as parents, it's our responsibility to make sure our children learn how to write well because communication skills, especially writing, have the biggest impact on academic and career success. Don't leave this up to chance or assume your child will just figure it out. It won't happen. It's up to you to give your child a competitive edge so they can get where they want to go. The best time to start is between grade 5 and grade 8, before high school begins. We do accept students in grades 9 and 10, but older students tend to have too much homework and too many extracurricular activities to focus on writing. The greatest return-on-investment is when children master the rules of writing at an early age, which leads to higher marks in ALL subjects and puts students FAR ahead of their peers. This advantage compounds over their entire academic career. Find out if the AEM Academic Writing Program would meet your needs. Complete the form to book your child’s complimentary writing assessment and personal demonstration of how the AEM Academic Writing Program delivers extraordinary results. We’ll meet over Zoom for 30 minutes to go over a sample of your child’s writing in detail, you’ll receive in-depth insights that immediately result in better writing, and you’ll have a chance to see exactly how the program works. New spots open in January. Make sure YOUR child can write well. Results are guaranteed or your money back.
