I cried when I first read this article. Like a baby. Almost four years ago, I quit my dream job in New York to move back to my family's farm. I had no idea what I was doing. I had worked so hard to carve out a career in book publishing and, suddenly, I was throwing it all away. I worried I was making a mistake. And, for more than a year after moving home, I wondered if I had. But, after years of helping authors tell their stories, I wanted to help my family tell ours. I grew up spending days in the fields with my dad and hours around my grandparents’ kitchen table, listening to stories about Lundberg Family Farms. The Dust Bowl days, when Great-Grandma Frances would run from window to window, stuffing each one with wet rags to keep the dust out. The early days, when Great-Grandpa Albert started to buy land and everybody told him he would “go broke” on it, but he told his boys it just needed a good farmer. The not-too-distant days, when my Grandpa Harlan and Great-Uncle Homer tried all sorts of crazy ways to manage weeds without chemicals as part of their commitment to, in Great-Grandpa Albert’s words, leave the land better than they found it. We started to lose the second generation—my grandpa, his brothers, and their wives—when I was in high school. And, with them, so many stories. These stories are a hallmark of my childhood and have shaped who I am today. They have held our family together. I wanted to carry them forward for the next generation. Still, I never imagined we would have the opportunity to share our story with Bon Appétit. And when they came to visit us on the farm, I figured the article would be about our regenerative organic farming practices and how they result in premium rice that’s beloved by Michelin-starred chefs like Chef Esther Ha and Chef Max Ng of Momofuku. So, when I read the article, I was overwhelmed. When I finally caught my breath, here’s what I said: “This is what it’s all about.” Food. Family. Farming. For the next generation.
