Something sharp moved over the top of my left hand. I opened my eyes and gasped. It was a crab. He was small, about the size of the back of my hand and almost the exact same color as the sand. He had two little black eyes sticking up from the top of his head…and they were watching me. I smiled and lifted my hand up to my face so me and the crab were eye-to-eye. “Well, hello there.” Part of me knew I should feel silly for talking to a crab like it was a person…except…I just didn’t. I hadn’t hesitated to speak to him, couldn’t even tell how I knew it was a him in the first place. It was just a gut feeling. He’d crawled onto my hand to say hello so I was saying hello back. He tapped his little claw on my skin so I gently lowered my hand until my palm was flat on the sand. He jumped right off and crawled a few inches away, and then he stopped. To my surprise, he turned and looked back up at me and waved his claw. Then he spun around and crawled over a bunch of stones – then stopped. I could’ve been imagining things, but I swore he looked up at me then dove under the stones. I frowned but then a second later he was back and staring at me. Then he dove under again. Acting on an impulse I couldn’t begin to describe and knew I wasn’t even going to try to, I gently moved the top layer of stones away from that spot until I saw the sand. Then my jaw dropped. Sitting in the sand, clustered in a little circle, was a handful of stones with holes in them. I gasped and dove for one. It was a pale, ivory sort of color almost like bone. It was a triangle shape but with soft, round edges. The hole was slightly off center and not a perfect circle. The surface was smooth to the touch, like the ocean had done worn the roughness down just for me. A hag stone. I’d found one! My heart fluttered with excitement. I looked down at my new crab friend and grinned. “Thank you for your help.” The crab tapped his claw on the sand then disappeared beneath the stones. I chuckled and shook my head. A crab had just helped me find what I was looking for. I wondered what my psychologist was going to think about that one. “If you peer through the hole of the stone you can see the Fae folk,” I said to myself then bit my lip and stared at the stone. “I have to look, right? They wouldn’t judge me for looking through it. Right? Right.” With my pulse hammering in my chest, I lifted the stone up to my face. I closed one eye and looked through the hole — and dropped it like it burned me. My heart skipped beats. I stared down at the stone in the sand. “No. No, I did not just see that. I’m losing my mind, that’s all. Or did I?” I cursed. I had to look again. With shaking fingers, I reached down and picked up the same stone…then held it up to my eye. My breath left me in a rush. The whole world swayed around me. Standing on the rocks, leaning against the lighthouse…was Riah. I froze in place. My entire body locked up. I hadn’t dreamed it. I wasn’t making this up. I saw him clear as day. He wore almost the same exact outfit he’d had on yesterday at school: black jeans, black leather jacket, and that darn black hoodie under it. The only difference was today his shirt was white. And with the sun shining brightly down on him, I could see the deep tan color of his skin through his shirt. His hood was down, so his hair looked like liquid gold as it fell around his shoulders. But nothing was as bright or as intense as his golden eyes. I lowered the stone and stared at the lighthouse, at the very spot I’d seen him but he wasn’t there. I lifted the stone and looked back – there he was. A cold chill that had nothing to do with the temperature slid down my spine. I clenched my teeth and stared at him through the stone. He raised his right hand and brushed his thumb over his bottom lip and it did something to my insides. My mouth watered in ways I had not given it permission to. My pulse was pounding so loud in my ears I couldn’t hear the waves anymore or the birds. Something on his hand flashed in the sunlight, but as his hand moved it shined bright purple. My eyes widened. It was that ring, the one he sometimes wore on his right hand and other times on his left. “Does that mean something? Or am I crazy? Oh God, I AM obsessed with him. I shouldn’t know which fingers he wears his rings. What is happening to me?” I was fully talking to myself at that point. I narrowed my eyes on him. “Who are you? Why are you following me? Are you even real right now?” And then he cocked his head to the side and narrowed his eyes just like I was. “I. See. You,” I whispered but it came out like a growl. His golden eyes widened for a fraction of a second – and then he vanished. I gasped. What in the heck— “Oh my God,” Savannah shouted from suddenly right behind me. I jumped and lowered the stone in my hand. “YOU FOUND ONE!” I exhaled in a rush. Oh. Right. The stones. “Gigi! She found one!” I stared at where I’d just seen Riah, waiting for him to reappear. “Um, I found several.” Savannah dropped down beside me and squealed, then clapped her hands. “YES!” “Thank God.” Gigi sighed from right behind us. “Does this mean we can go now?” “Girl, just gimme a sec—” “Yes. Let’s go. Please?” I squeezed my stone tight in my hand and got to my feet, but my legs were shaking. Nausea rolled in my stomach then bubbled up my throat. “I’m not feeling too well. I think I need to eat something.” --FAE MAGIC: The Complete Series (The Coven)
