We were contacted by sweet Hazel’s momma back in October. She was in declining health and knew hospice would be on the horizon, and the most important thing in the world to her was making sure Hazel was safe and comfortable for the rest of her life. As an older girl and lifetime house pig, there weren’t any other safe options for Hazel. When an animal is intaken there are always unpredictable variables, but we definitely didn’t anticipate Hazel would end up requiring costly medical diagnostics and hospitalization immediately upon arrival. When we commit to taking an animal, we fully commit to their needs entirely- whether that’s special housing accommodation, daily medication, special diet, etc. Not only did we commit to caring for Hazel, we made a commitment to Hazel’s family that we would love and care for their beloved pig like she was one of our own after they leave this earth. Hazel’s owner and family can rest assured that every one of Hazel’s needs are met for the rest of her days, but this comes with a price. Hazel has been at Purdue since Thursday and has undergone a consult with the neurology team, bloodwork, as well as a CT scan, and is receiving supportive care. She’s also currently being treated for double ear infections and tomorrow she’ll receive CT guided joint injections to help offset discomfort of her degenerative musculoskeletal condition. It’s incredible the difference these injections have made to other pigs in our care of similar circumstance. Our hope is Hazel’s neuro symptoms will improve with the ear treatment. Her symptoms are severe, even with all the diagnostics none are really explaining the why. Say a prayer for Hazel, she’s been through a lot and needs some relief. It’s hard enough on her to lose her mama and spend the weekend in the hospital is no fun. We’ve raised just a little over $1,023 towards Hazel’s bill, with her weekend stay we are approaching $3,000.
