Featured plant: Elderberry USDA zones 3-8. American, or Black, or common Elderberry grows well in full sun to part shade. Expansive, flat, white flowers give way to clusters of black elderberry fruits in late summer. The fruit can be used to make delicious jams, jellies, pie filings and elderberry wine. Elderberry is a delicious and useful plant. Elderberries are particularly rich in flavonoids, especially anthocyanins which are responsible for their deep purple (almost black) coloring. These powerful antioxidants work to keep people strong and resilient. Do not eat the berries fresh--they must be cooked before eating. Elderberry needs at least two plants growing near each other in order to fruit well. Native to PA and many other areas in the US. Sold as a bare root plant, 16-24" plus roots.
