Shearing sheep is one of the oldest jobs on earth. In a world run by screens and technology beyond our wildest dreams, these are the folks carrying the torch of an ancient craft that quite literally predates the written word. While the rest of the world races to automate every last thing, shearing on our ranch looks about the same as it did a century ago- bent spines and burning forearms, the buzz of shears, the bleats of sheep, the smell of lanolin and sweat thick in the barn, wool piling up at their feet. Shearing is hard and dirty work. It’s fast, physical, precise, and gentle all at the same time. Shearers must be strong and patient. The skill they hold is about as niche as it gets. There’s a certain beauty in that that you can’t help but admire. A perfect shear is exactly 48 strokes, carefully following the contours of the animal to remove its wool in one clean fleece. It’s done by hand because that’s the only way to do it right. In a lot of ways, it’s the opposite of cheap and easy. We think that’s the point.
