The truth about BO, and why it survives the wash. Sweat doesn't smell. Not on its own. The smell is made by bacteria that live on everyone's skin, a group called Micrococcus among them, and they do particularly well on polyester. Which is what most gym kit is made of. They feed on the body oil and skin residue your sweat leaves in the fabric, and what they leave behind is the smell. A hot cycle and a strong detergent get the surface clean, but the residue is bound into the fibre. So the top smells fine on the hanger and turns on you ten minutes into the warm-up, because there's still something in there to feed on. Dip laundry sheets go at the residue instead of perfuming over it. A coconut-derived cleaning agent lifts the oil out of the fibre, and encapsulated enzymes break down the protein residue, so there's nothing left for the bacteria to work with. Kit that's already got the set-in smell: soak it for an hour in cool water with a sheet before you wash, so the enzymes get time on the fabric, then wash as normal. Dermatologically tested and hypoallergenic, so it's gentle on skin as well. More than 100,000 UK families have made the swap. 50% off your first order: £6.00 for 30 washes, then £12.00 a month + £3.95 delivery. Pause, skip or cancel anytime.
