Telling a child to "just sound it out" is well-meaning. But without the right phonics foundation, it's a bit like telling someone to "just read the map" in a language they don't know 🤯⁠ ⁠ Sounding out only works if a child knows what sounds the letters make - and knows how to blend them. For many children, those skills haven't been explicitly taught yet. ⁠ ⁠ What to say instead: ⁠ ⁠ - "Let's look at the first sound.
