Pre-Flight Checks Early morning, the start of a new day, and apparently there are procedures to follow before heading off. This Egyptian Goose was standing in the shallows going through what looked very much like a set of pre-flight checks. Wings out, feathers adjusted, everything seemingly inspected before deciding what the rest of the morning might hold. Despite the name, the Egyptian Goose is actually a duck. Because apparently naming birds wasn't confusing enough already. As for whether this is a male or female, I'm none the wiser. The sexes look very similar and one of the better ways of telling them apart is by their vocalisations. This particular bird wasn't saying anything, so we'll just have to leave that mystery unresolved. I captured a series as it stretched and moved its wings, and these two frames ended up being my favourites. They're very different interpretations of essentially the same moment. The colour image catches the wings at their most chaotic, with the feathers fanned in almost every direction and that lovely early morning warmth in the background. The black and white frame is cleaner and more graphic, with the fully extended wing creating a much stronger shape across the frame. Settings: 400mm | 1/2000 sec | f/7.1 | ISO 320 I know which one I'm leaning towards, but I'm interested to see whether everyone else agrees. So, which gets your vote? Image 1: Colour or Image 2: Black & White And no sitting on the fence. 😄 Short caption Pre-Flight Checks Same Egyptian Goose, same early morning, two very different frames. Colour or black & white, which one gets your vote?
