Summit Critical Incident Response Registered Clinical Counsellors are available at short notice to provide Critical Incident Response (CIR) to organizations. CIR is aimed at providing support to groups of people who have been exposed to trauma or upsetting events in the workplace or in schools/ colleges. Note we do not use the Mitchell model (Critical Incident Stress Debriefing) because scientific data does not support directly processing critical incidents within a group setting. Instead, we focus on providing: • education and reassurance about normal responses to trauma • information and support for how individuals can care for themselves and others following exposure to a critical incident or trauma • if required, information about how organisations can support workers following a critical incident • Practical and easy to follow guidelines for increasing resiliency following a critical incident • a safe space to ask questions. Common questions we get from participants include: “why am I having nightmares?”, “why am I thinking about the incident all the time?”, “why do I feel like it was my fault when I know it really wasn’t?”, “why am I finding it hard to focus at work?” FAQ’s What is a “critical incident”? A critical incident is an upsetting event experienced in the workplace, school or college. Examples include but are not limited to: witnessing or learning about a death or severe injury; involvement in a robbery or assault; the sudden passing of a colleague or student; experiencing significant fear; being threatened with physical violence or death. How long does a CIR intervention take? Each CIR intervention is tailored to the organisation and the people who attend. The length of time will therefore vary, but a 90 minute to 2-hour intervention is common. Can attendees have individual counselling after the initial intervention? Yes. Our RCC’s are available to provide one-on-one counselling as needed to attendees in the weeks following the CIR intervention. If specific processing or conversation about the critical event itself is needed, this would be done in one-to-one counselling. Where will the intervention take place? We can host the CIR at our beautiful offices in Nelson, BC. We can also travel to you. NOTE if we are coming to you, you will need to provide a room that can accommodate the number of attendees. The space should be comfortable, beverages should be provided as well as a white board/flipchart. We also like to show slides, so having a larger screen available is helpful. How much does it cost? We charge the hourly rate for the RCC who provides the intervention (usually between $150 and $170 per hour). There is an additional charge for travel time if the CIR takes place outside Nelson. How quickly after a critical incident should the intervention be held? Within the first 1-3 weeks is ideal. Who should attend a CIR? Anyone who has been impacted by the critical incident AND who wishes to attend. NOTE Attendance at CIR group interventions should never be compulsory for attendees. Mandatory attendance can lead to unfavourable outcomes for some people. If you have people who want support but do not wish to attend a group intervention, we can provide one-one-one CIR/counselling for them. How do I book? You can call us on 250 352 6600 or email [email protected] to book or ask further questions.
