The other day, I was on set with Riley Gaines for a project we've been working on with Dr. Ben Carson. The whole point of it is to make sure kids know it’s okay to be proud of America. And in between takes, we got to talking about why this project matters. Each of us knows what it's like to chase a dream in America and have the freedom to achieve it. I started acting at 14 years old and turned that into a career of making family-uplifting content. Riley turned her passion for swimming into a 12-time All-American title and now has a platform fighting for fairness in women's sports. Dr. Carson lived in poverty as a child but grew up to become a Presidential Cabinet member and one of the top neurosurgeons in the world. We all had different paths, but the common thread is this: God gave us the ability, America gave us the opportunity, and we put in the hard work. THAT is the American spirit. But unfortunately, kids today are being taught that the American dream is built on selfishness and that there's nothing exceptional about our nation. They see our founders as villains. And that’s concerning to me. Because if you can make people ashamed of their own country, you can essentially destroy it from the inside out. If kids actually knew our history and the things we’ve achieved, they would know why hating America doesn’t actually make sense. That’s why Riley, Dr. Carson, and I each wrote a new children's book to teach kids exactly that. Mine is about how the ordinary men and women who built this nation weren’t perfect, but they had extraordinary faith and courage. Dr. Carson’s is about how faith was instrumental in the founding of our nation. And Riley’s is for toddlers, teaching them things like giving thanks for our freedom to pray and worship God.
