‘Trying to understand the depth of time or the age of the universe is so beyond our human comprehension,’ says Conrad Shawcross (@conradshawcross). The London-based sculptor is explaining the inconceivable scope of his work at this year’s Frieze Sculpture, on display in The Regent’s Park until 1 November. ‘Eye of the Needle’ (2026), presented by @victoriamirogallery, is part of Shawcross’s new series ‘Time Pebble’, which responds to his ongoing fascination with the notion and nature of time, on both a human and cosmic scale. The work is composed of more than a thousand individual metal planes, all perforated with different patterns of thousands of holes. As the light passes through it, the piece changes fractionally and unrepeatedly in each moment, with the work becoming a kind of visual clock: an experience of celestial time in every reconfiguration. ‘[It’s] inspired by the big bang,’ he says. ‘The idea of the universe starting at this small point and growing from that to the size it is now. It’s about a yearning to find out the real secrets of the universe.’ Frieze Sculpture is in The Regent’s Park until 1 November, free and open to all.
