23 tabs open. Coffee gone cold. And I'm about to buy another skull candle for the woman who has OPINIONS about Poe. Her birthday is coming up and I started early this year. Proud of myself, honestly. Opened a new tab. Typed "gift for horror lover." Felt like a responsible adult human being. And then the next hour and a half happened. Candles shaped like skulls. A mug with "I Do What I Want" printed on it. A throw blanket that said "Boo" in block letters — seasonal, probably for October. A tote bag with a ghost on it from an Etsy shop with seven reviews, two of which seemed to be from the same person. A phone case. A bookmark set, which feels like buying a runner a new pair of shoelaces. A puzzle. A shirt with a cartoon bat on it. Another candle. At some point I had 23 tabs open and couldn't remember what I'd liked in tab 4. Went back to tab 4. It was a calendar. I don't remember saving a calendar. This is the part I always hit. Not panic — I wasn't panicking. Just that particular brand of shopping fatigue where everything starts to look the same and you can feel the point approaching where you'll pick something because you NEED to pick something. I recognize this feeling. I've been here before. My mom has a "Wine O'Clock" sign somewhere because of this feeling. Here's the thing — I actually KNOW her taste. She reads horror. Real horror, gothic horror, the kind where the prose is beautiful and the death is slow and meaningful. She has the shelf. She has the atmosphere. She knows exactly which Poe stories are underrated and she has opinions about them. Book people are honestly hard to shop for because most of them already have a system and they're particular. So "I'll get her a book" is out. She has them. Probably since college. I'm looking for something in the space of her IDENTITY — something that says "I see exactly who you are" — but everything in that space is either a $9 novelty item or a $300 designer bag that happens to be black. There's a whole uncanny valley in between where stuff looks like it's trying but isn't quite there. I kept clicking. Kept adding things to carts on three different sites and then closing the tab without checking out. "I spend the run up days carefully and obsessively fine tuning my baskets on the various websites and then somehow still panic on the day and change my mind before eventually getting to a f*** it point and buying it all." That's the exact shape of this. I KNOW that's where this is going. And the worst part? She'll smile. She'll say thank you. And I'll know — AGAIN — that I settled. That she got a gift from the f*** it point instead of from someone who actually tried. That's the real cost of 23 tabs and a cold coffee. Not that I wasted time. That I'll waste the MOMENT. What changed it this year was seeing a bag — an actual leather bag — with full gothic novel artwork across both sides. Dracula. Frankenstein. Dorian Gray. The King in Yellow. Stacked like a library shelf, done in proper art, on real leather with black metal hardware and actual structure. Not a tote. Not a novelty. A bag someone carries because they want to, every single day, because it's genuinely beautiful and genuinely specific to exactly the kind of reader she is. I stopped scrolling. Didn't open another tab for comparison. Didn't need to check three other sites. Just sat there thinking: she would actually LOSE HER MIND over this. Catherine Goodson-Dodd bought one and wrote: "This is a gift for my best friend! She's going to freak out!" — which is exactly the energy I was chasing for two hours across 23 tabs without finding it. Thomas Bush: "It has long been a battle to buy my wife a gift that she would cherish! Alas I am victorious!" I laughed out loud because that's the battle. That's exactly what I was in the middle of losing. The Codex of Gothic Tales from Lettoria. Ships from the US, arrives in a few days.
