Amina and Mohammed were forced to flee to a camp in Afar, Ethiopia, after losing their home and their cattle due to drought. Then came the heart-wrenching prospect of losing Medina, their six-month-old daughter. At a UNICEF-supported hospital, Medina was screened for severe malnutrition and her treatment soon began, with therapeutic milk and ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF). “RUTF is more than medicine; it restores hope to families," said Abenezer, one of the health workers providing care to Medina. Her parents were able to continue her treatment with RUTF at home, taken alongside breastmilk to help Medina regain strength. Soon she could sit up and smile again. Within months, she was back to a healthy weight. Stories like Medina's remind us of what is possible when health and nutrition services reach families in time. UNICEF is working to ensure every child, everywhere, receives the care they need.
