Ad text
I took my son, Tom, to his first football match- Man City v. Arsenal. The conversation we had after the game was a familiar one that I have with my IELTS students every day. As we left the stadium, I asked him if he still wanted to be a professional footballer. He eagerly replied, "Yes!" I responded, "Well, you know what you've got to do to make that happen? Stop watching football, and start playing it." Tom replied, "But I can't train in this weather. It's freezing." I asked him, "Do you think the players complained about the cold last night?" He thought for a moment and then said, "No, but I'm just a boy, and they are men." This is exactly the same as what most IELTS students say: - I think watching people speak and write on YouTube will help me improve more than speaking and writing. - I wish I could do the work, but I don’t have time. - Successful people are ‘special’ or ‘lucky’. All of these are just different forms of procrastination. Tricks we play on ourselves to convince ourselves we are doing the right thing. I understand; I make the same excuses in other areas of my life. I've made 1000 excuses for not going to the gym this week. Procrastination is a normal human trait, but now that you're aware of it, you can start to take action. Instead of reading social media posts about IELTS today, DO something. Don't hesitate to contact me if you need free advice on what to DO next.
