"I would never mistake the woman I am going to marry," Theron declared, his voice echoing over the loud bass of the penthouse party. He was blindfolded, sitting on the plush leather sofa, playing a stupid party game where he had to identify his girlfriend by touch alone. But instead of my hand, Theron was tightly gripping the hand of my best friend, Vespera. The crowd of our wealthy friends erupted into uncomfortable laughter, suggesting he try again, telling him he made a mistake. Theron didn't listen. He pulled Vespera forward by her wrist, dragging her right into his lap. He wrapped his arms around her waist, burying his face into her stomach. "This is the hand I held just yesterday. I would absolutely never make a mistake." Vespera giggled, her cheeks flushed red with alcohol and something else. She balled her hand into a small fist and lightly pounded on Theron's broad chest. "Theron! You are so blind. You actually guessed wrong. You need to be punished!" Theron didn't look embarrassed at all when he ripped the blindfold off. He looked up at Vespera sitting on his thighs, his eyes softening in a way that made my chest tighten with sharp, agonizing pain. He extended his hand back to her openly. "Alright, alright, princess. Why don't you pull me back then?" Instead of taking his hand, Vespera grabbed his wrist, leaned down, and bit his forearm hard. Theron’s eyes curved into a deep, affectionate smile. They looked exactly like two lovers flirting intensely. Sitting a few feet away, watching this three-person entanglement that had defined my life for the past five years, I suddenly felt deeply, utterly exhausted. The crowd laughed awkwardly, saying our trio had such an enviable, close relationship. Theron finally noticed me. He reached out and grabbed my hand only after he had thoroughly finished playing with Vespera. "Of course our relationship is good. The three of us are going to be tangled together for the rest of our lives." After saying that, he immediately looked back at Vespera, and the two of them resumed their physical teasing, their shoulders brushing, their knees knocking together under the glass table. I had drunk two glasses of strong whiskey on an empty stomach, and the alcohol was hitting my brain hard. The room spun. I reached out and pulled on Theron’s tailored sleeve. "I am really drunk. My head hurts..." Theron turned his body sharply, shaking my hand off his sleeve in the process. He reached over and pulled Vespera's slipping silk top back up over her shoulder, his fingers lingering on her bare skin. "Look at you. If you can't handle your liquor, don't drink! Now you are going to make me go out of my way to take you home." Vespera pouted her lips, leaning closer to him. "Kaelia would never find me annoying, right?" I pressed my fingers into my throbbing temples, feeling bile rise in my throat. "I am really drunk. Can you just take me home first..." Theron cut me off instantly, his voice cold and harsh. "Enough. Stop trying to copy Vespera's little temper tantrums. When you do it, it is just annoying." He said she was annoying, but he took the expensive wool scarf I had hand-knitted for him for our anniversary, took it off his own neck, and wrapped it securely around Vespera's shoulders, making sure she was completely bundled up against the winter cold. "I am taking Vespera home first. She is too drunk. I am not comfortable letting her go alone." I was drunk too. We lived together. It was literally on the way. But before I could even open my mouth to point that out, Theron was already walking out the door with Vespera leaning heavily against his side. As they left, they were laughing loudly, Vespera’s steps completely steady, not looking drunk in the slightest. The party emptied out. Everyone left in pairs. I waited alone in the lobby for over an hour before a rideshare driver finally accepted my request in the freezing snowstorm. By the time I unlocked the door to our empty, dark townhouse, my hands were violently red and swollen. It took me five minutes just to turn the key in the lock because my fingers were completely numb. Once inside the warm air, my joints started to burn and itch with excruciating pain. I remembered a time when Theron would never let this happen. Whenever we were outside, he would grab my hands, shove them deep into his own coat pockets, and hold them tight. When his friends mocked him for being entirely whipped, he would just kiss my knuckles proudly. "My wife got severe frostbite years ago. She cannot handle the cold. As long as I am alive, I will never let my wife feel the freezing cold again." But tonight, in the middle of a brutal winter storm, the man who left me to freeze alone was him. Vespera’s apartment was only thirty minutes away from our townhouse. Five hours passed. It was 3:00 AM when Theron finally walked through the front door. He smelled heavily of Vespera’s signature vanilla and tobacco perfume. "You have no idea how much Vespera tossed and turned," Theron complained, taking off his coat. "She is so demanding and difficult. You are so much better, Kaelia." But the smile on his face was huge. He looked entirely satisfied, completely ruining his reputation in the corporate world as the cold, emotionless CEO. He walked over to the sofa where I was curled up in the dark and pulled a small, expensive bakery box from behind his back, presenting it like a prize. "Here. This is that little cake you girls love so much. I noticed you didn't eat anything at dinner. Eat up, don't starve yourself." I hadn't eaten anything. I had alcohol burning a hole in my stomach. I was genuinely surprised he actually noticed. But when I opened the box, my heart stopped, and I immediately lost any desire to eat. "Why aren't you eating?" Theron frowned. "Vespera absolutely loves these." Yes. Vespera loved them. It was a pistachio mango cronut. My chest felt like a knife was violently twisting inside it. "No thanks. I am full from swallowing the freezing wind outside for an hour." Normally, Theron would have instantly caught my sarcasm and apologized. Tonight, he just rolled his eyes, pulled out his phone, and immediately initiated a video call. Vespera answered on the first ring, looking wide awake in her silk pajamas. "Vespera, look at this," Theron said, pointing the camera at me. "My wife is picking up your bad habits. She is throwing a temper tantrum right now." Vespera giggled through the speaker, showing absolutely zero signs of a hangover. "Kaelia, don't copy me! Men hate troublesome women like me, that's why I am still single!" She paused, her eyes widening in fake shock. "Ah! Theron! Why did you buy Kaelia a mango pastry? Mango is my favorite! Kaelia is deathly allergic to mangoes!" Theron slapped his forehead, looking annoyed. "Who told you to keep whining in my ear all night? You distracted me so much I completely forgot my own wife's fatal allergy!" He looked down at me. "Kaelia, I will buy you something else tomorrow." "My stomach is completely empty right now..." I whispered. "Didn't you just say you were full from the wind?" Theron stood up dismissively, walking toward the bedroom without looking back. "I need to scold Vespera properly. She chanted in my ear so much tonight she made me forget your allergies. I am going to settle the score with her."
