It’s often some little thing: the gaze of a doe seen by the roadside, the afternoon slant of light on a field, something a friend said, a passage of music. Every day brings possibilities for poetry; part of the poet’s work is to cultivate receptivity, and to dig into the images that compel us most to see if we can discover how they matter. In this talk we’ll look at some ways of developing the given, the germ of a poem. Sometimes this happens intuitively, but it’s useful to practice going deeper in order to see what depths an image may reveal. We’ll talk about this work, do some short exercises for practice, and read some terrific contemporary poems that use different means of getting to the heart of the matter. Useful, I hope, to poets at any level of experience.
