The rest of the industry has moved away from wax carving. On one hand this makes me sad, but on the other, I completely understand. With 3D printing and AI, you can make a piece in hours, using software to account for things like casting shrinkage that artisans have historically broken their backs over. And it will spit out 20 different sizes which you can rough up later to make them look handmade. But when you go through the journey of trying to create naturally, slowly carving out a dream from your mind into wax with your hands... The missteps and mistakes often become the beauty of what you create. Once you’ve finally perfected the first piece, you then need to try to perfectly recreate it seven more times to make all the sizes. Which sometimes sucks. But when you look at a craft for weeks or months. You can’t help but pour heart and soul into what you create. After the curse words and deep breaths settle, you cant help but find meaning in every little nick, scratch or notch. You get to look back in awe, and feel a piece that has soul. For this reason we will never 3D print or be using AI in any of our creations. We will always wax carve and take the slow approach.I think it’s so important to show the crafters I get to work with that their hands, hearts and time are more valuable than software.
