Emotional connection and support isn’t just about making a child (or adult) feel better in the moment. It is building an internal resource structure in the brain that the person can later lean back on when hard things are happening. A lot of anxiety is the fear of our own emotions. And this happened for two reasons: 1. Being outright shamed for the emotions leads kids to shame themselves for their feelings and to feel afraid of them. 2. We learn to soothe ourselves by being soothed. Plain and simple. So if you weren’t soothed for your emotions as a child, it would make sense that they will bring up anxiety now. And if you were shamed for your emotions as a child, of course those feelings feel scary now. The positive thing is that we can unlearn these patterns and beliefs and heal them.
