I’d checked every room for vagrants but when I came back to the living room there was a man in the kitchen. He had his back turned and my heart pounded heavily in my chest. “Hey!” I said, causing him to jolt. He spun around to look at me. “Oh, I thought I was alone,” he said, pushing thick blond curls out of his face. “Well, you’re not and this place is mine,” I said, taking in the mess he'd made in the short time he'd been here. “Ever heard of safety in numbers?” the man asked me. “Ever heard of come any closer and you’ll be sorry?” I tossed back. It sort of felt like something akin to praise. He held his free hand out so that I could see it and tossed the noodles back on the coffee table with the other hand. “I’ll see you around,” he said. “Not if I can help it,” I replied.
