I hope i never catch the little rats who did this… I’m 61, been an electrician since I left school at 16. I've had the same routine for nearly 40 years. And what happened the other night has absolutely crushed me. My van's my pride and joy. Every job I do depends on my tools. Some of them cost more than my first car. Last Tuesday I woke up to about six notifications on my phone from our doorbell. All were between 2:47am and 3:12am. Usually it’s just a fox or cat. But the picture next to the notifications didn’t show anything. I opened the app and the clips were all black. No picture. No movement. Nothing. Something felt off. I jumped out of bed, ran downstairs and opened the front door. That’s when I saw it… My doorbell camera was smashed. At that moment my heart dropped. I had a sick feeling in my stomach. First thing I done was check my van. It was still there… But the back doors were wide open. Every single tool was gone. Drills. Saws. Electrical kit. Chargers. Batteries. Over £4,500 worth of gear — GONE!! Stuff I’ve built up over years. My hands were shaking as I called the police I was that angry. I've got a mortgage and 3 jobs booked in this week that I now can't do. Those tools are how I feed my family. No work means no money. No money means missed payments. It hits you all at once. The police came about an hour later and said: "That's the first thing they do now, they smash the camera, cover or rip it off the wall before they do anything else." "Doorbell cameras are an easy target because anyone can reach them before they capture anything useful." I felt like an idiot. I'd spent £130 for it, plus £96 every year for the cloud storage thing. I thought it would help if something like this did ever happen. But it didn't capture a single thing because they destroyed it first! The officer said without footage there wasn't much they could do. And then it got worse… I had to call my insurance. They wanted proof. Footage. Images. Anything. All I could give them was a smashed camera and an empty van. They started asking questions like I’d done something wrong. “How were the tools secured?” “Do you have evidence of forced entry?” “Can you prove when this happened?” Then he goes: "We'll need to investigate this further without any solid evidence." "It could take 4-6 weeks." What a JOKE!! Without those tools I can't earn and don’t have the money to replace them. I couldn’t sleep for days. Every noise outside had me looking out the window. I couldn’t believe how stupid I was for thinking that doorbell camera was “security”. That evening my mate Dave came round. He's a plumber, been in the trade longer than me. When I told him what happened, he just nodded and said: “That’s why I don’t rely doorbell cameras anymore.” He showed me his phone. It was footage from his security camera at 2AM. “Caught these 2 guys last month trying my van” I could see EVERYTHING in full colour. Two blokes in dark clothing. Their faces. The logos on their hoodies. Even the colour of their VW Golf getaway car. All at 2 in the morning! I couldn’t believe it, my doorbell looked NOTHING like that. He laughed and said: "This sits hidden inside my window so there's no way anyone can touch it or even notice it's there." “It records anyone who comes near my house and pings me right away” "Cost me under £50 mate." I asked how much the subscription was each month. He goes: "There’s no monthly subscription, it saves everything onto a free memory card that comes with it." I got him to send me the link. It’s a brand called SafeView and I ordered two that night. One for the front covering the drive. And one for the back window. When they arrived I set them both up in about 15 minutes. Didn’t need a drill or tools (Perfect because I didn’t even have any now! lol) I just stuck it to the window and connected to the app & WiFi Now when I check my phone, I can see my entire driveway and back garden in crystal clear colour. At night it’s unbelievable. I can see my entire drive and van from my bedroom in full colour even at midnight. And because it sits inside the window, there's no way anyone can smash it, steal it, or disable it. They don't even know it's there. I set it to alert for only human motion. So if anyone comes near my van, it records right away and I get a notification to my phone. Not for cats or passing cars, just REAL people. There's literally nothing to pay monthly. It saves onto the memory card that’s already inside the camera. I've cancelled my Ring subscription which was costing me £96 a year. The police came back yesterday with an update. Unfortunately they still haven't caught them. And the insurance are still "investigating." I've had to borrow tools from mates just to get by. Not to mention I’ve lost over £2,000 in work. But at least now I sleep better at night knowing I've got proper protection. Right now the same camera is 45% off (if you buy two like I did, you get a bigger discount). Here's the link where I got mine: https://www.monremi.com/pages/camukv3 I've told every one I know to get one. The UK is getting worse every day and the government do nothing. There’s too many thieving rats who will just take your hard earned stuff. Don't make the same mistake I did. Those doorbell cameras aren't real security, they're a target. If anyone can touch it, smash them or rip them off… it’s basically useless! Get something that actually protects you. Something they can't even mess with. Better to be safe than sorry. Stay safe out there!
