Remember the Sears Christmas Wish Book? That thick, magical catalog that landed in our mailboxes, dog-eared by kids dreaming about Christmas morning. In our house, my sister and I circled things we were dreaming of with different coloured pens to make it easy for our parents. Amazon has brought that idea back with a printed Christmas catalog filled with toys and wonder, delivered right to families’ homes. We got ours today. From a marketing point of view, it’s clever. In a world dominated by screens, they’ve revived something tactile and emotional. It’s a powerful reminder that innovation isn’t always about technology. Sometimes, it’s about reconnecting with the human experiences we’ve left behind. But here’s where it gets complicated for me. This nostalgic campaign comes from one of the biggest companies driving the shift away from local retail. It’s a beautiful gesture that also highlights an uncomfortable truth: while we’re celebrating the sentiment, small businesses are the ones losing ground. I can’t help but admire the creativity while feeling the irony. Because for all the heart this campaign evokes, it also reminds us of what’s being lost — connection, community, and the small retailers that bring character to our towns and main streets. Maybe that’s the real challenge for local brands this Christmas. How can we capture that same emotional magic in our own way? How can we tell stories that spark nostalgia and connection, without the corporate scale behind us? I don't believe Innovation belongs to the biggest player in the room. It belongs to the ones brave enough to connect with people in a way that feels genuine. What do you think? Can local brands reclaim that Christmas magic on their own terms?
