Ad text

The State Pension is a regular payment from the government that you can claim once you reach State Pension age, as long as you’ve built up enough National Insurance contributions during your working life. It’s been around since 1908 and remains a key part of UK retirement income, with pensioners collectively receiving around £177.8 billion a year, making up a large share of welfare spending. The full new State Pension is currently £241.30 per week (£12,547 per year in 2026/27) and increases each April under the triple lock, based on inflation, earnings growth or 2.5% (whichever is highest). To qualify, you’ll usually need at least 10 qualifying years for a minimum amount and 35 years for the full pension, which can be built up through work, self-employment, voluntary contributions or credits. Overall, how much you receive depends on your National Insurance record.
