17 units of affordable below market rental housing have now been fully turned over to Shishálh Nation members on the Sunshine Coast. 10 of the homes (all of the upper levels) were rescued from Port Moody in partnership with Wesgroup Properties, relocated, retrofitted and repurposed. We carefully selected the ten best homes with the greatest value. We lead modest modernizations to all of the homes for energy efficiency and comfort. Renewal Development general contracted this groundbreaking project from start to finish. We worked with many wonderful local trades and contractors including M Wyse Enterprise Ltd., Vancouver Bay Builders, and so many more who made this ambitious project possible. Seventy percent of the trades who worked on these homes were Shishálh Nation members. Investing in skill development, capacity building, and local economic development. The Renewal Homes were 20 - 40% more affordable than building new or any other modular solution. We also prevented 10 good homes from being torn down, we diverted 1,000,000 KG of materials from ending in local landfills, and lowered the GHG impact (over a 60 year timeline) by 230,000 KG.
