| Men's Mental Health Awareness | In recognizing June as Men's Mental Health Awareness Month, The Department of Water & Sanitation (DWS) yesterday (03 June 2026) launched its Men' Forum under the Theme: “Men as victims and allies towards the eradication of Gender-based Violence and Femicide: From dismantling patriarchy, gender stereotypes and toxic masculinity to redefining positive masculinity for society free from inequalities". The department with its men’s forum signed a pledge that affirm their commitment to join fellow like-minded South African men 🇿🇦 to spearhead initiatives to encourage men to play active roles by promoting gender equality values as part of their outreach and advocacy role during the socialisation of children from early ages until adulthood. Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) remains a pervasive social and structural challenge in South Africa, deeply rooted in unequal power relations, harmful masculinities, and socio-economic inequalities. Workplace environments, including public sector institutions, can inadvertently contribute to GBVF through normalized gender stereotypes, silence around abuse, and insufficient accountability mechanisms. In male-dominated sectors such as water and sanitation, these dynamics may be further reinforced through increased criminal activities, manifesting though incidents of construction mafias such as extortion and sextortion , thereby necessitating targeted interventions that engage men as active agents of change. Some of the discussions were on (1) Men & Health, (2) Financial Planning, (3) Power and Accountability, (3) Co-parenting, (4) Handling Stress & Pressure at work and home, (5) and of cause more real men' talk 😊👌! #genderequality #menmentalhealthawareness
